COMING SOON - “LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON”
(Ooc info under cut)
//open rp
[It’s a late, rainy night in central London. In a crowded, energetic bar there’s a band up on stage with the bassist leading them. Though unlike his band mates, he’s hidden in shadow and he’s got sunglasses on. As the show wraps up and the rest of the band begins to pack, he sits on the edge of the stage and starts playing a meandering baseline, occasionally glancing out at the crowd. Something about it bothers him.]
[One of the members of the crowd doesn’t look quite right. Though, oddly enough, nobody else seems to notice this stranger except for him….not even his bandmates. The audience member in particular doesn’t seem to have blinked, or really moved much at all, and is rather over-dressed for the locale. Unlike the rest of the crowd, who were meandering towards an exit since the show was over…this individual was staying put, fidgeting with a glittery red pen.]
[He looks out into the crowd again, this time locking eyes with the stranger. The lights flicker a moment before he gives them a friendly wave and flicks his sunglasses down off of his head]
You enjoy the show?
[The stranger returned the eye contact, its pupils were…rather strange, but people could always wear contact lenses, right? It nods energetically in response to his question, giving polite golf claps.]
Indeed I did! Good show, good show! I haven’t been to a bar in quite some time, so it was rather refreshing to enjoy such an energetic atmosphere.
[He shrugs and give it a little half smile. He jumps down from the stage and starts over towards them, bass slung over his back]
We try our best. Glad to know we could make your visit a good one.
[He offers his hand]
I’m Leroy!
[It returns the handshake. It’s very noticeable that the hand that he just shook was not made of flesh. It felt unnaturally smooth, extremely pale, and a bit cold. If this even was a person, it had to have some kind of prosthetic…or maybe a skin condition?]
It’s nice to meet you, Leroy. My name is Calliope!
[Whatever it was…it seemed friendly enough?]
Calliope!
[He shakes its hand. If it was able to feel through its strange maybe-skin it would feel that his hands were freezing cold. He seemed mostly unbothered by their interesting appearance. Though he was wearing sunglasses in a dark room]
I like your name! You like music a lot then, or just a coincidence?
Thank you! I do like music, quite a lot! My favourite genres are Japanese pop, circus music, and rock. If I had to pick a specific genre of rock though…I’m rather fond of metal, though I know my appearance does not embody that of your typical metal enthusiast.
[It could indeed feel through its “skin”, acknowledging the cold feeling as something potentially noteworthy. Another peculiarity it noticed were the sunglasses in a dark room. Perhaps he was blind..? But he wouldn’t have noticed Calliope earlier unless he was an Eye avatar…and even then, it found this possibility to be unlikely.]
[He laughs a bit, trying to get a better look at it’s outfit]
Maybe not, but it might be more metal to look so unexpected. I mean I look like an indie guitarist but I’ve been a rock and jazz bassist my whole life.
I assume circus music is where you got your name?
That’s true, subversion of expectations is metal, I’d say. You do pull off the indie look quite well, I must say.
[It nodded softly.]
Indeed! Circus music is where I got my name. Or, rather, how I chose my name. I always loved the circus as a child, and the music of the calliope always made me smile with its lilting, whimsical sound.
[He smiles listening to it talk]
It’s very unique and distinct, like there’s nothing else that really makes a sound like that. I had an old song a friend and I wrote together that was supposed to sound like carousel music. It sounded a little more like a march when we were done with it, but I remember listening to carousels at an amusement park for like an hour to try and figure out how to get that sound, so I get what you mean.
I admire your dedication to accuracy. You don’t see many artists doing that anymore. I bet your song sounded great.
[It returned the smile.]
That’s why I chose that instrument as my name. Unique, distinct, nothing or no one will ever be quite like me. And I’m proud of that.
[Calliope gently tilted its head.]
Speaking of music though, do you have a favourite song you’ve wrote?
[He absolutely lights up, nodding cheerfully]
I do!! It was one I played earlier tonight from the new album I’m working on. It’s not the titular track, that would be “Leave The Lights On”. But I’m really proud of “Sunshine”.
[The song he was describing was one of the last of the set. A bright, upbeat love song describing someone as being as bright as sunshine. The sun to the singer’s moon. For that song Leroy, who had notably been back in the shadows for the whole set despite leading the band, came up to the front with the spotlight directly on him]
I remember that one! It was definitely my favorite of the set. I don’t experience romantic attraction, but I could still definitely connect with it, since I wish to have friends that I feel so strongly about.
[It was enjoying his energy, though it wasn’t anything Calli could feed off of, it enjoyed the warmth in his presence right now.]
I saw you come closer to the front after the whole show during that song, you definitely look at home under a spotlight.
Oh- uhhm. . . Romantic? I wouldn’t say it’s- it’s more about-
[He flushes and very quickly tried to move on]
Well nevermind. And uhm, thank you. I can only really stand to do it for one song a night, I’ve got a strong sensitivity to light, gives me massive migraines, but I really do enjoy being up there.
Apologies if I drew the wrong conclusion. It..happens more than I’d like to admit, though I’ve attempted to remedy the issue many times…
[Calliope puts one of its hands on the back of its neck, semi embarrassed….but it doesn’t blush.]
It is unfortunate that you have such a severe light sensitivity, but I suppose it might make it feel more special, that is, when you get to do one song a night under the spotlight. And it also explains the sunglasses in a dark room, I figured it was a fashion choice that I was going to compliment you on, but looking back, that makes a lot of sense.
[He chuckles]
At least it looks fashionable.
I can’t see it perfectly, but your outfit looks incredible!

[The sky is overcast today, normally making it a rather dreary day to go out, but for one young man sitting under the shade of a tree in a park, it was perfect. He had a notebook on his lap and a pen in his hand, looking rather focused on something.]
[Shadows around leroy began to shift as little shadowy rabbits started to run around his feet. A very odd stanger walked by and stopped to look at the shadows]
[He looks up from his notebook at the rabbits and then at the stranger. He waves]
Is that you? Making those rabbits?
[They nod and give them an apologetic look as they tried to shoo the bunnies away]
[He sets his notebook down and watches them run]
Oh no no, they’re really cool! How did you do that?
[They blink a few times and smile]
Thank you!
[They signed as the rabbits turned into birds]
[He watches them in awe]
Woah. . .
[He looks at their signing and shifts awkwardly]
I- sorry, are you deaf? Or- dumb question. I uh, I don’t really know sign language.
[They shook their head and made a thumbs up before pointing to their ears. They dug around in their coat pockets and pulled out a pen, but no notebook]
[Leroy quickly turns a page and offers his own]
Oh! Uh, here! Use mine.
[They hesitantly took the notebook and gave him a look thag asked, "are you sure?"they felt bad since they saw him writing in it before[
Really! It was just some notes, nothing very important. Just ideas. I’ll remember them.
[They gave him one last look before they turned to a blank page]
How do you do that? The thing with the shadows I mean.
[They write as quickly as they can]
<I dunno. It just happens, theyre like shadow puppets>
[They punctuated their sentace with a smiley face]
They’re really cool. Are you like me, then? Not very good in light?
