Back Ten is back!

Season 3 kicks off with a tribute to the Touring Party in Argentina. We dug up several of the tourists that were a part of the very first Lions International tour back in 2000 to share their memories and experiences of the very first match, against a Nissan company team in Amsterdam.

This is the oral history of the birth of Lions touring culture. We share this as a way of wishing the Lions the best of luck in the matches ahead:

Indeed in 2007 Argentina had 30 players in France and just as many in Italy. Argentina’s World Cup team nonetheless had Felipe Contepomi playing in Ireland and Marcos Ayerza, Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe, Ignacio Fernández Lobbe, Juan Manuel Leguizamón and Martín Schusterman all playing in England. The contemporary versions of such players were not allowed to get away. That is, to say they mostly never left Argentina and of those who did the pick of the bunch are contracted to the UAR. It is telling to consider the facts that Stade Français were interested in Cordero, that Isa spent time with Toulon, that Sánchez and Tuculet are back young unlike their 2007 versions Hernández and Corleto.

Good to see more of this. Or any of this. New Zealand and Australia take so much out of the Pacific Island nations and give so little back.

Expanded game representation and independence at the heart of World Rugby governance reform

World Rugby Council has approved historic and wide-ranging reform of its governance structures, creating a dynamic environment for wider union and regional representation and an independent skills-based voice on the international federation's decision-making bodies.

Some progressive decisions made by the organization formerly known as the IRB. For decades they held back the growth of the game in favor of preserving centuries old hegemony for just 8 nations. There was a period of time - as recent as the 80s - when caps weren’t even awarded for tier 2 nations.

But as RWC 2015 has demonstrated, the gap is closing. Great performances by the likes of Argentina, Japan, and Georgia in this RWC are proof; as has been showings from Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga in the recent past.

And now the emerging nations will have a seat at the table. A long time coming, this will do wonders for the growth of the game.
