other folks have probably said it before, but I just connected the dots two days ago and decided that it's worth a post. Anyway, look at these sequence of events:
no wonder he was so adamant that Chuck would live after that head shot. he was the reason Chuck was there to begin with. feeling guilty, Ronald?
on one hand, he says to himself that he doesn't feel guilty. why would he? he wouldn't have known that Carver would be drunk and violent when he gave the order. he wouldn't have known that Grant would try and talk the private down (without a helmet or a riffle) instead of firing on sight. how could he have known? he couldn't have! these things just happen when you're in war, even if the war in Europe is supposed to be over. logically, this is not his fault.
on the other hand, though. there is a part of him (the part that he'd smothered for so long, but can't ignore now that he is slowly being reminded that he is, in fact, human, and decidedly not revenant) that is telling him that it most definitely is.
I'll ask again: feeling guilty, Ronald?

Here I fall on bruised weary knees: To an endless field of mud that stretches - then breaks Torn ragged by trees and barbed wire, with strange beauty aches
Here I find a hesitant peace: Dawn’s first pale light from cracked lips draws a prayer My soul stripped of false promises, in truth laid bare
And here–! the glory of war at last! Sweet moment of silence, calm stillness of death The sun rises, light fading, and I draw one last breath

One of the most haunting scenes from the September 11 attacks was the scene of those who were forced to jump to their imminent deaths rather than wait for death inside the burning building. Almost all of them jumped alone but there were a few witnesses who claim a couple were holding hands as they jumped. One woman was seen to hold down her skirt in an attempt to protect her modesty before jumping to her death.
Those who jumped from the World Trade Centre are often known as the forgotten victims of September 11 due to the fact that nobody knows for sure who they are and even more tragically, at the time few seem to want to know. The media and American establishment were reluctant to dwell on those who died this way and posted very few photographs and only briefly mentioned them in news articles.
It is estimated that at least 200 people died from jumping from the burning building; the jumping began shortly after the first air plane hit at 8:46AM and continued for the 102 minutes that the north tower stood.
