We've been having a little 'boom box' search on Tumblr's community, and we love this!

We've been experimenting this week with the relationship of material design with sound, and looking at colour relationships of different materials. Here are some of our tests with some foam board, mount board and the laser cutter!

The actuator works by vibrating, turning the whole surface of the poster into a speaker.

We've been doing a spot of material sample collection and there are some of them! Now to see whether our capacitive touch will work through a layer of mount board, wood veneer or metallised paper!

Fred LeMoal

Fred is our electronics design engineer and likes working in an environment which combines interesting design with technology. Fred designs, programmes and builds our circuit boards and will be central to enabling the functionality of the boom box. Fred has two beautiful kids and loves house music. When he's not in the studio, you can find him playing with his decks or pretending to be a dragon to entertain his son.

Louise Shephard

Louise spent most of the 80s bopping around to music on her Walkman. Louise is our PA and a cupcake baker extraordinaire, creating anything from Rubix Cubes to tiny little edible garden parties atop a cake. She will be organising and supporting everyone throughout the project.

Cornelia Dahlgren

Cornelia grew up in the Swedish countryside recording song ideas onto her tape recorder. Cornelia never lost her love for tapes and currently uses her Hitachi TRK-8200E in her live show. Now living in London, Cornelia is an artist, songwriter and producer signed to JIM publishing. She writes songs for artists such as Bonobo, Portico Quartet and Dark Sky as well as her own compositions. Cornelia has always had a passion for linking music with other artforms. She is the composer of the BadaBoomBox Soundtrack and an active part of the development team.

Jingzi Pan

Jingzi was born in 1990, and grew up with vast amount of digital equipment. Jingzi has studied mechanical design, industrial design and interaction design (the clever clogs), and has exhibited widely in this field. Jingzi is passionate about new forms of human-device interaction, and is ready to refresh the design of the classic boom box. She also likes playing the ukulele.

Jingzi is mainly in charge of product design and development.

About BadaBoomBox

We are Novalia, a collaboration of musicians, designers and technology whizzes coming together to bring you BadaBoomBox.

At Novalia we specialise in printed electronics, putting conductive ink into paper (and other things) to make them interactive. We can make a surface touch sensitive, play music, respond to its environment and connect to mobile devices via bluetooth. We aim to bridge the gap between physical print and the digital world in a way that is fun, engaging and a bit unexpected!

BadaBoomBox was born out of a conversation between Kate Stone, founder of Novalia, and Cornelia Dahlgren, an artist, songwriter and producer.

Working together, we are in the process of creating a physical boom box that uses Novalia's conductive ink technology coupled with bluetooth to stream music from a mobile device back to the boom box, which will work as a badass paper speaker.

We're hoping not only to make the design innovative and beautiful, but include many of the features you would find on a traditional boom box, such as playing with bass and treble levels as well as being able to play, pause and skip tracks. 

We'll do this by utilising Novalia's technology to create conductive ink 'touch points' that can respond to your finger tips and send signals to your mobile device, controlling iTunes. 

We're interested in documenting this process from start to crowd funding finish and making an awesome product that is beautiful, portable and kicks out some great sound for your summer sessions.
