The Pen
Johna Dhel M. Badion
Committing errors are just part of every learning process, and no one can be blamed for doing mistakes even in many attempts. This was what I’ve learned while doing the activity.
Initially, I didn’t think that we were already fit to handle such serious task. I thought that it needs mastery of the concepts which was true, but with the right process, anyone could proofread as long as they are knowledgeable enough and have keen eyes for errors.
We had a great start in the activity. However, I felt regretful for not paying attention to the process. It was only then did I realize that every single step we made was very crucial in making a successful editing of the papers we were assigned to. It was only then did I realize that every line we made with our pen played a big role in making the students learn.
As a reader, I could point out if there were errors in a text. Being judgmental is part of our nature and I don’t think that it will vanish in the near future. It will always remain.
Most of us are only good at pointing out the wrong doings of others, but afraid to correct them. We were afraid of the possibility that we might do the same mistakes they did. This was what I felt about the task. I was afraid and hesitant, and that was the biggest challenge that I encountered in doing the activity.
I was clearly aware that revising the works of those students would be a great help for their improvement. The thing is, I feared that if I revise their works, I might change the concept of the message that they were trying to convey. I was afraid that I might not be able to give the justice that they want me to meet.
My favourite teacher during my High School days was my English teacher, but now that I am already taking the path he took before he became a teacher, I wanted to ask him so many questions. Why does it seem easy for him to do his task while I struggle to correct even a simple mistake? Why didn’t he mention that language is more than what it seems?
Nevertheless, it was not his fault that I did not dig deeper into the subject. He already gave me the concepts, but I did not take my time to enrich it.
My English teacher was mainly the reason why I chose this program. I was inspired by his stories and journey of making it through, but the task made me realize that language is more complex than what it seems. The proofreading activity made me grasp the idea that it was never easy to be an educator.
Language is a complex topic, and it should be taught with deep understanding and correct application which was the same with other courses. Anyone can easily express meaning, but not all could pay attention to the right structure in order to efficiently convey a message.
As a student, the concepts that I’ve learned were useful since I aspire to become an English teacher. When the time comes that I’m already professional, the self-trust and knowledge that I gained will be my guide in producing efficient students through the power of language.
Someday, I will be able to change more lives with my pen, but for now, I’m just a student who’s aiming for her dreams.
