blinkies found here: 1, 2, 3 (i couldn't find where 4 came from)
around october 2025, i was an avid uma musume player who had recently stumbled onto this video on my youtube feed. although i no longer play uma musume (mostly just fell out of it), this video still holds a very special place in my heart. under the cut is every single reference/easter egg i could find in these glorious 2 minutes and 42 seconds.
disclaimer: i do not speak or understand japanese. google translate or archives of japanese uma musume terms were used here. also this post is gargantuan, rip to weaker devices/internet.
-the video starts with the rolling lineup of the starting grid in the same order they qualified, seen at the beginning of any race in uma musume.
-what would typically dictate their gate numbers has been replaced with their driver numbers. the horse racing equivalent of pole position (post position), where a horse is assigned the innermost gate, has mixed results in irl horse racing while in uma musume it can become beneficial under certain skills and item uses.
-their names have been directly translated to japanese.
-only max has an epithet, gained at the end of a career in uma musume. his epithet translates to "WDC ● Champion".
-the japanese text at the top of the screen translates to "bahrain grand prix".
-typically in an uma musume race, three icons representing the start, middle, and end of a race will be shown. these represent the favorability of your uma (horse) in these three sections. in order of most to least favorable, it follows: double circle > single circle > solid triangle > hollow triangle > no symbol. not sure why op didn't include these.
-under the favorability symbols, there's a flat-out ranking of the most favored to win.
-the order goes: lewis, charles, max, daniel, carlos, checo, fernando, lando/oscar (joint 8th), george. not sure what this stands for, may be op's favorites list (and papaya rules foreshadowing).
-all others have been replaced with "??" (with an exception we'll get to later), which is not the case in the uma musume games.
-under the favorability ranking, the running style is notated (another exception in this video). there are four styles (english version names): front runner, pace chaser, late surger, and end closer. japanese version names are different but pace chaser is called leader and i refuse to accept that fact.
-front runners: max, charles, lando
-pace chasers: george, carlos, oscar, lewis, alex, zhou
-late surgers: checo, fernando, nico, kevin, valtteri, pierre
-end closers: yuki, lance, daniel, esteban
-certain astute readers may have noticed one ignored driver in the list above. remember the two exceptions? here they are.
-lance, possibly due to his father's inhumane wealth, has infinite favorability. too bad his car and/or himself is ass.
-logan straight up got a new running style. (if you even could call it that) because it's literally "destruction" translated into japanese. something something florida man.
-the video continues in op's edit style to the umapyoi legend (umapyoi densetsu) game version song mashed up with popular f1 quotes. there's so many of them, i found it a little unnecessary to list them all here.
-at around 0:31, the style changes to resemble the in-game race commentary. the japanese text is the surname of whoever is speaking. here, it is ferrari and leclerc.
-the video returns to an edit style until around 1:15 (not the screenshot, that's around 1:23), where the style resembles a story or long cutscene in uma musume. the japanese text translates to "max verstappen".
-yes, that is lance's car spinning on hamilton, edited in since the above screenshot was after the "lance stroll, lance stroll, finds himself off road" bit.
-at 1:24, the style returns to the race commentary version.
-at around 1:32, lando's "it's friday then, it's saturday, sunday, what?" radio is shortened to "it's friday, saturday, sunday, what?". on friday, saturday (screenshot), and sunday, the dates have their japanese translations overlayed on top, followed by "WHAT?".
-carlos' "smooth operator" radio from his mclaren days directly follows, which has the japanese translation overlayed in a similar fashion. in this screenshot, the word translated is "operator".
-this is followed by the "you will not have the drink" radio, where it is again, overlayed by japanese. however, what was originally "nomemasen (飲めません, i can't drink it)" becomes "agemasen (あげません, i won't give it to you) for a split second, the modified characters notated in a magenta color.
-this subtle change is a reference to an uma musume meme, where special week (portrayed above) yells "AGEMASEN!" to mejiro mcqueen (center). the original clip is a cutaway where members of team spica (vodka, gold ship, mejiro mcqueen, special week, daiwa scarlet, in that order in the image above) are all holding "thank you's" when mcqueen also wants one of her own. she asks gold ship first before asking special week twice. special week yells "AGEMASEN!" on the second ask.
-the magenta color used on the modified radio message is the same color used on special week's signature racewear.
-the edit continues on with op's original style.
-around 1:42 on "kimi no aiba ga!" (your beloved horse), it is overlayed with "here comes sebastian vettel" and text meaning "sebastian vettel has arrived".
-during "gentlemen, a short view back to the past" (1:44), it returns to the story/cutscene style. the text reads walter koster, the man who asked this infamous question.
the style reverts back to op's original style.
-at the end of the song, the edited logo reads:
"f1 daughter
pretty grand prix"
(uma musume = horse daughter)
the first time i watched this, i realized how unserious this sport was and texted my f1 fan irl about it. thought i'd be a max + charles fan, then george looped me in (and gave me depression this season, thanks toto...), and then i specifically pulled the 2024 meme mayhem logan sargeant card and now he's in the conglomerate. my journey with f1/motorsports started with horses and it still continues with horses. go ford proton competion #88, at least your car hasn't fucked your drivers over yet (except for le mans...).
