it was probably the cheap ass ipa in his bloodstream or the way the back porch string lights haloed around her hair, but the world had taken on that slow motion shimmer that makes every choice feel like a turning point. the things he swore he'd never say aloud. yet here they are. "maybe i am a little drunk ... okay a lot of drunk, but that doesn't mean i don't know exactly what im saying." a hand rakes through his curls, but there's no stopping him from letting words tumble out now. "things have already changed between us. "i have tried to keep my distance. tried every trick and still i can't just keep going on like their isn't something happening between us." he lifts his gaze now — brown meeting brown, two drowned stars. " i can't do neutral. not with you."
“there’s nothing happening here.” she forced out, a clear lie leaving glossed lips. if nothing was happening, maya would let go of his shirt. she would take a few steps back, create even a semblance of personal space between them. she would think about her boyfriend, who was led to believe that she was back at home in her own bed. the heat was sweltering all day, with sweat slicking her olive skin, even with the air cranking inside. when she stepped outside, she was looking for relief from the sea of bodies smushed against one another. but now that she stood close to theo, her skin burned all over again. “theo.” maya hummed. “what do you expect me to do with that? just tell me what we should do.”

features scrunch softly at the words, tongue pulling over his bottom lip as he does his best to think of a response that doesn't sound entirely dismissive — tatum doesn't deserve that, certainly not because he's in a bad mood. “ can he not work for your dad without being your boyfriend? ” he points out, slouching back in the chair with a sigh. “ less of a hr issue, it might be better. ” the words are only partly in jest, doing little to help the slow sinking in his chest. it's not his place, theo does know that, yet he can't help it when he also knows she deserves far more. “ he's an asshole. ” he mutters, attention darting momentarily back to the door.
“pretty sure he only hired him because we’re together, which feels like an hr issue of it’s own.” tatum rolled her eyes on her way towards the couch. she sank down in her usual spot on the couch, kicking her feet up to rest of theo’s outstretched legs. “he’s an asshole.” tatum repeated in agreement, nodding at his words. both her father and garrett. two assholes that she’d have to play nice with in the breakroom. “worse, he’s an asshole who wants me to look bad. i was talking to my mom about it. she thinks he knows it’s coming. she thinks he’s prepping, so that i’ll look like the asshole when i finally do it.”

"you're drunk." she fumbled, teeth sinking into her bottom lip. "what about..." their friendship, her boyfriend, the fact that anyone could see if they squinted hard enough into the backyard. she blinked up at them with big, brown eyes. "i don't want anything to change between us."

he's sulking, the way he normally is when their partner drops by unannounced, an increasingly frequent occurrence that theo's resorted to making no effort to try and pretend he enjoys. his head's been in his book for the last hour, ignoring the faint laughter ringing out behind him until the sound of the front door finally closes with a satisfying thud. “ i thought you were ending things. ” he deadpans, brown eyes pulling up from a sentence he hasn't taken in for the last few minutes. “ that didn't sound like the end. ”
tatum nearly jumped at the sound of his voice behind her. she’d almost forgotten theo was there, waiting impatiently for her to shift her attention towards him for the night. “i was.” she began, an obvious but on the tip of her tongue. “my dad offered him a job.” she doesn’t mention the finer points that garrett shared. that her father, who didn’t even like tatum most of the time, referred to garrett as his son. she decided it’d be best not to rub salt in the wound. she left out a few details, boiling it down to what mattered. “he blindsided me — i didn’t know what to do.”
