it took a lot to tear her from bed this morning, jett wrapped around her and sleeping peacefully. she hadn't wanted to wake him, but she did linger longer than she should have to watch him sleep — god, what's wrong with her? usually one urgent email from her supervising partner is enough to whip her into shape and have her rushing off to the office. usually she didn't even need the warning, already anticipating the need for her presence and yet another late night at work. today, it took six and a vaguely threatening text. how silly that she forgot that in this profession, her time is never her own — she does bill for it though! she leaves a note on the nightstand where jett will see it, lest he thinks she really left him. although, it would be a weird move to leave him in her own apartment with the intent of escape. in her characteristically neat handwriting it says: called in to the office :( help yourself to anything in the fridge. i'll talk to you later. she signs it with a heart — uncharacteristically so.
after an entire day of being browbeaten by a bitch of a brief, adriana finally returns home, with all intents of pouring herself a glass of wine, unwinding, and calling jett to apologize for abandoning him. she unlocks the door, pushes on inside, and isn't met with silence. music plays from the kitchen and she hears the sizzle of something on the stove. her heart stops and instinct has her reaching for the pepper spray she keeps in her purse. her steps are slow, deliberate, quiet, as she rounds her way to her destination. she turns the corner, sees a figure at the stove, her pepper spray raised high as her heart pounds in her chest. the figure turns, and the canister goes clattering to the ground as she drops it out of shock ( thank god it was still in its locked position! ). " you're still here? " she questions, taking in the sight of a shirtless jett who's suddenly taking domain over her sparsely-used kitchen, " and you're cooking? did i even have anything in the fridge to cook? " she already knows the answer to that — absolutely not.
