I like to space out rereads of fics so that my poor memory can be of good consequence and I can relearn all my favorite details of the writing. the other night I visited just our lullaby for the first time in short while and was floored again by the characterization of mj and jm. my all-time favorite characterization of them in fic, i have to say, both as individuals and as a pairing! doubly-impressive how that characterization exists across a time skip without at all feeling stale or disjointed

and now I’m in an odd situation of hoping to forget everything quickly to have that experience yet again haha

random jmj sorority au draft/messy outline bc idk when i'll have the time to write this. set in a slightly alternate universe to the sorority au i outlined last year... the itnw jmj sorority multiverse endures

context: they're asian american and in an american american interest sorority. jimin's a 3rd-year business major and comparative literature minor. she's the recruitment chair for the sorority.

minjeong's a 2nd-year education major who got dragged out to rush week bc her best friend yizhuo wanted to check it out. now she's a pledge and sort of bad at it because she isn't as impressionable and desperate to get in as the other freshmen pledges. the social hierarchy kind of irks her -- she doesn't like being told what to do by people who haven't earned her respect yet. but yizhuo and her are in this together, and she does think the sisters are really cool, so she figures she might as well see it through.

jimin doesn't believe in hazing per se, but she likes upholding all of the age-old greek life traditions. like pledges having to follow arbitrary rules to prove how much they deserve to cross. her biggest one? pledges can't drink until they officially cross. it's the ultimate test of willpower for a college student.

minjeong mostly follows that rule. but one day it's her childhood friend's birthday, and that friend goes to another college in the next city over, and surely no one's gonna find out, right? she doesn't expect to see yu jimin walk into the house at the end of the night. she can't believe it's jimin of all people - the recruitment chair, first of all, and the one sister who takes upholding tradition way too seriously. it makes minjeong roll her eyes every time when jimin goes on and on about sisterhood and how important it is to respect the rules the founding mothers set. it's not that deep! didn't everyone else join to make friends and party anyways?

minjeong turns on her heel and tries to run off before jm sees her, but it's too late. she feels a hand wrapping around her wrist. "minjeong," jimin says in a low tone. "you know you could get dropped for this, right?"

minjeong turns back and huffs. "i'm sober. it's my best friend's birthday. i'm just here to celebrate with her."

jimin's eyes narrow. she leans in closer, studying minjeong's face. "you're flushed."

"it's a house party, jimin. it's hot in here."

jimin's looming over her now. minjeong's heart races at the prospect of being caught, at getting dropped from the sorority she genuinely wants to be part of now, at being on the receiving end of that dark, stern look from yu jimin.

"i can smell the alcohol on your breath," jimin says. "are you lying to me?"

"i would never," minjeong breathes. "i can prove it."

jimin cocks her head. "yeah? how?"

minjeong drags her into an empty room... then one thing leads to another and they sleep together. this would require some mental gymnastics LOL but i just really like the idea of jm sleeping with pledge mj even though she really should not be. i feel like she'd get reallyyyy into maintaining the active vs. pledge hierarchy, even in bed, and mj would hate herself for finding it hot too. but she notices that jimin likes feeling in control, likes feeling big and strong and capable, and one night she lets an unnie slip out when they're in bed.

jimin freezes. her eyes go big. they're korean american, but they only ever really speak english with each other. they don't use honorifics. minjeong's never called her that before. she's always been the youngest in her family -- she's never been anyone's unnie before. but the thought of being minjeong's unnie makes her throb.

"what did you say?"

minjeong's so flushed. so pretty like this, with a light sheen of sweat on her bare skin from the heat of the party. she still drinks even though it's against the rules, but jimin can only blame herself for letting it slide every time minjeong gives her a faux-innocent pout and asks what she can do for jimin to overlook it. god, what is she thinking, fucking a pledge? abusing her authority like this, even though she's supposed to be a model sister? she should stop this, lift herself off of minjeong, pull her top back on, walk out and pretend none of this ever happened --

"jimin unnie," minjeong repeats, her breathy voice laced with the melody of a moan. her hand tightens in jimin's hair and pulls her closer. "i need unnie inside," she whispers against jimin's lips before she kisses her.

jimin can't be blamed for kissing her back.

do you have a simple writing tip (maybe aside from reading a lot) that you think makes a big impact?

when i'm feeling stuck or intimidated because i don't know where to start, something that really helps me is writing down "what i want to say is..." at the top of a blank page and letting the ideas and feelings guide me from there. i'm really prone to getting caught up in structure and order, like spending hours outlining and editing or fixating on the exact sequence of events that needs to happen next. but i think i write the best when i let writing be this messy, honest thing that happens to me and when i let the truth of what i want to say guide me

does jmj realize how romantic they can come across…i feel like there is this slight obliviousness to them but maybe you disagree. i mean of course know they are a popular ship and generally have high self-awareness as idols but for example i don’t think it hit them until talking about it on live how unusual the way they went down that slide was lol. or how romantic the way they look at each other comes across (especially jm).

i’m not really assuming their relationship is platonic or not. even if they knew they had non-platonic feelings for each other i think they would believe they are acting like besties (most of the time cause they have used the word girlfriend a couple times 😅)

also on the other hand i think ningselle know exactly what they are doing and how they will be perceived haha

i feel the same way! i think their baseline dynamic is so comfortable, tender, and sweet that they don't realize how romantic they come off. it's just their normal. this tweet really captures that for me. the gif of them running across a grand stage in front of thousands of fans but jm's eyes still being drawn to mj + paired with their 2024 EOY messages to each other (which read like vows)...

i'm kinda late to the trend for this but i recently read "i who have never known men" and it was my first 5/5 in forever. if you liked armageddon by anonymous (my fav aespa fic ever) you might enjoy it

my little fangirl moment is that i commented on the fic again to mention that the book reminded me of it, and the writer responded saying that they read the book bc of my comment and finished it in a single sitting. so it's cosigned by them too!

minjeong was sooooo in love with jimin during debut era she made it painfully obvious that she had the biggest crush on her.

i really do wonder sometimes where all that bravery and mindlessness went on minjeong’s part. she really was all over jimin, always finding any excuse to have physical contact with her in situations that didnt call for it, always fidgeting with jimin’s hands, or that one time she was sitting in her lap. and jimin always welcomed it too, she never made minjeong feel like it was overbearing.

i just wonder what happened that made minjeong tone it down with time. i wonder if all those interactions during debut where all made during a period of unspoken homoerotic infatuation from minjeong’s part, when she was lasting a long time without confessing or doing something that crossed a line, until she one day did and it made jimin react in a way that made minjeong recoil

my (maybe toxic?) hc is that mj wouldn't act so obviously infatuated just because of a one-sided crush, even though she was younger and more naive at the time. my theory is that jm encouraged it behind the scenes, was just better at hiding it in front of the cameras, and that she was the one who normalized the physical touch, codependency, and weird non-platonic tension between them.

i can imagine jm being subconsciously aware of mj's feelings but not being ready to address her own feelings... so in private she'd unintentionally do and say things that make mj fall even deeper and feel like something real is developing between them. like inviting mj to chuseok dinner with her family because mj couldn't make the trip home that year and jokingly saying "it's like i'm bringing a girlfriend home this year. you better be on your best behavior." telling her mom of course it's fine that they're sharing jm's bed in her childhood bedroom. they're best friends. why should jm sleep on the couch? never mind the fact that best friends don't fall asleep curled into each other. showing mj her old journals where she wrote down all of her aspirations and dreams to be a singer and, too softly to be casual, saying "i've never shown this to anyone before." making mj feel special and chosen before pulling away out of fear of her own feelings.

i feel like at some point mj got fed up with how hot and cold jm could be and became more withdrawn with her affections until they eventually worked things out between them. and now they're both kind of obsessed with each other and shameless about it yayyy

i think both mj and jm are possessive over each other, but it’s obvious mj is the more jealous one. there are so many times where mj is staring at jm with a blank face whenever jm is interacting with someone else or saying something mj doesnt like (for example, jm saying in their lotte vlog that she likes pretty unnies and mj literally not reacting and looking away unamused). i think there are times where mj feels vulnerable and insecure and while in bed mj will say things to prove to jm that she doesnt need anyone else

and then there are other times when she’s lowkey irritated at how jm will provoke her or unconsciously do things that make mj jealous and then mj will want to claim her

and it’s so crazy how mj never drops the honorific and whenever she’s talking to jm her voice get whinier and higher. i genuinely can’t stop thinking about their recent live stream in the piano room. those looks mj was giving her and her overall attitude was giving “shy girl unsuccessfully hiding her crush.” there was just something there. a need to impress jm and jm being oblivious to it all (or consciously ignoring it for fear of making it real, who knows). like when mj was sliding in the piano trying to get a reaction from jm and then jm gets distracted with the flower and mj is just gazing and her, wanting to banter, and literally says teasingly “when did you get here?” then jm leaves and mj says “oh, she’s leaving.” like she’s yearningggg for that fun back and forth between crushes where you just play around and amuse each other

i’m a believer that mj has always and probably will always be in too deep while jm is lowkey evading the topic and situation out of fear

i fully believe that jm pretends to be oblivious to whatever they have going on between them and plays up her dumb jokes to de-escalate when she feels like mj is toeing the line with being too affectionate or flirty. like she tries to regain control of the situation by making everything a big joke (see: her jokingly humming careless whisper and giving mj a flower) but it backfires bc mj is lowkey into it. if anything it only makes mj more flirty when jm acts like that because 1) she genuinely finds it cute and charming and 2) at this point she knows that jm has a tendency to play up the jokes when she's feeling nervous and she wants to keep pushing to see if jm will give her a real reaction for once. and she kinda likes seeing how dumb jm will get for her. when jm acts like shin-chan as a defense mechanism but it only makes mj want to crack her more 😭😭

while we're here let's discuss the pet play allegations. for the longest time i was like jmj are NOT into pet play they are just asian!!! animal comparisons are so baked into asian culture that it isn't novel for jm to call mj a puppy. but after that live i was like well. we will be opening google docs
