Varric: I have to save Solas from himself!
Me, who distinctly remembers Master Tethras’ name among the other companions’ disapproval over me saying the exact same thing, but romance-coded:
Henry’s friendships / Hansry rant
The more I think about it, the more I’m fascinated with the Hansry romance on Henry’s side. Because even though it’s obvious that Hans has been pining for a LONG time, Henry mostly saw Hans as a great, maybe his best friend. Sure, he had friends in Skalitz that he’s known his whole life. But it was… how do I put it. Give and take friendships. I scratch your back, you do mine. I help you redecorate the German’s house, you help me beat up that alcoholic asshole. I bring you three full sets of cuman leaders’ armors and you give me… a small share of what you earned for a ring you stole. Yeah. Great pals. Such a true, uninterested friendship. Then when you compare it to hanging out with Hans, you can understand why Henry definitely has more fun with his lordship. They actually chat, joke, tease, share rides, hunts, wine. It’s more… natural. Relaxing in a way, even though trouble is never far.
And now I think that for a long time, maybe, Henry didn’t see Hans romantically, at least not obviously. He tells him he’s his closest friend, that he won’t allow anything to happen to him, that he cares about him very much, that Hans’ safety matters way more than his own. So he did have strong feelings for Hans - of course - but he really didn’t have time to think how deeply they went before. (To be fair, in both games, Hans mostly waits or is trapped somewhere 90% of the time, so he has plenty of time to ponder, while Henry runs around from errand to errand to save everyone, so I doubt our blacksmith boy has much time to think. About anything. Ever.)
It makes it truly tragic when you imagine that Henry understood these feelings completely the ONE moment he did nothing, when the room was quiet and the world stilled : in Suchdol. Listening to Hans’ tale. When he placed a hand on his own to reassure him. Imagine, that’s when it finally completely clicked. Right before he has to leave to his death. So he gets up because he has to go, and it’s too late anyway - he took too long to understand these feelings properly and now he’s likely going to die without knowing if they could blossom.
And then Hans kisses him. He recoils in shock, misunderstanding, horror, because it’s too late. And it’s too much. He doesn’t have time to think, to process this, he never does. He’s on another mission to save everyone. No time to linger on feelings. But when he hears Hans on the brink of tears and thinks just for a second about the implications, he realizes that for once, the world can wait. For once, he focuses on his own feelings. And the clarity is blinding - he’s in love with Hans and Hans loves him back. So he locks the door and walks back inside to show him, determined, maybe kind of upset at himself, but tender the second he holds Hans’ side and cradles his neck, guiding him to the bed. As I’ve seen many people say - he’s locked in now. Taken control of his own path once and for all.
The descriptions of KCD2 perks drive me insane and for good reason, especially the ones that refer to Henry as a knight or legendary figures. Just, here’s a sample :
- Well-Built : the arch of your shoulders looks like you’re a descendant of the titan Atlas.
- Heroic Vigour : you are so tireless, persistant and indomitable that you could almost rival Roland or Hector.
- Blood of Siegfried : the ancient hero Siegfried killed the dragon Fafnir and bathed in his blood. That way, no ordinary blade could hurt him. You may not be a dragon slayer, but you may have some of Siegfried's blood in you.
- Undaunted Cavalier : looking like an intrepid hero of legends is the first step to performing heroic deeds. And thar's the first step to entering into legend.
- Heracles : you've built yourself up to look like a reborn Hercules. When you walk by, your muscles ripple and your broad back blocks out the sun. Women gaze at you admiringly, and men look down in envy.
- Adept of the Mystic Arts : a frequent misfortune befalls many scholars, and that is a lack of funds. You need not fear this, for you trade as if Saint Christopher were guiding your hand and Mercury were whispering in your ear.
And you know why these descriptions drive me in the brink of sanity ? Because 95% of these references - Henry doesn’t know them. Maybe he’s read about them once in a book ? Or heard a minstrel in Skalitz mention them ? But that’s it. And now you take Hans. Ever since he was able to read (not 2 weeks ago like his yokel bf, more like around 2 DECADES), he’s been browsing one adventure book after the next (when he wasn’t forced to study, train or read the Bible, and when he wasn’t busy sneaking out or on hunting trips). Knightly adventures have been his one true, dare I say healthiest escape from his golden cage. His mind is FILLED with depictions and fantasies of knights and legendary men.
And these descriptions are what goes through Hans’s mind when he looks at Henry. So of course, when he’s delirious with a fever at Bozhena’s, that’s how he describes both he and his bodyguard. Of course that’s the references he uses every time he compliments Henry or gifts him something. Of course that’s the medium he uses to declare his love. Henry is the legendary, knightly figure straight out of his favorite books who’s come to rescue him in every way, not just from Maleshov, but from monotony, boredom, unhappiness and love deprivation.
sure the hans romance is optional however it is NOT optional to lay down your life for him and risk everything over and over just to keep him by your side<3

I love looking into my kcd sketch folder and. finding things
in the game, mutt and pebbles are always nearby when henry wakes up after sleepwalking. therefore, this is the sight he sees when he wakes up in some random shrub.
i love to imagine them following him loyally during the night as he stumbles along mindlessly, like okay time for one of dad’s nighttime strolls again i guess
