Do you like to dance? Listen to EP2.
If you donât already know, let me introduce to you Yaeji: the hip-hop and house influenced artist whoâs almost as cute as the stuffed puppy dog she rests on in her Spotify profile picture. But, donât let this sugar-coated aesthetic fool you - sheâs actually a badass. Known for making house beats while she sings/raps in both Korean and English, the GODMODE producer came onto the dance music scene in 2016 with her first single âNew York 93,â catching the attention of top music blogs like Pitchfork and Resident Advisor. She came out with her first self-titled EP in March of this year, and, this past Friday, she put out her second, called EP2, filled with melodic, spacey synths, dance anthems, and a Drake cover - honestly, what more could you ask for?
The EP starts with a moodier track called âfeelings change,â containing an almost stream of conscious, yet rhythmic lyrical loop with a rich, enchanting synth tone lulling over a simple chord progression, a moving bass line, and little to no percussion. This two and a half minute hypnosis drifts into an unexpecting house track with the catchy and extremely danceable lyric, âmake it rain, girl, make it rain.â Entitled none other than âraingurl,â the second song comes with deep and hard hitting bass and percussion, shiny synth sounds, and Yaejiâs anthemic lyricism that takes you straight to a hip club in New York City (the city where she happens to be based).
Her first single off the EP, âdrink iâm sippin on,â comes next and sounds just as good within the EP as it does on its own. With frequent 808s throughout and captivating background vocals, the fact that most of this hip-hop inspired song is in another language doesnât even matter. The downtempo beat and steady vocals is head-nod-inducing, making you want to listen over and over. âafter thatâ starts with an extraterrestrial-like synth tone over a bass-centered rhythm. The song then brings in a shimmery synth and then breaks down to percussion and vocals. As the structure repeats, each chorus builds with a new element each time it is sung. As the EP comes to a close, Yaeji chooses to do Drakeâs song âpassionfruit,â turning the initial R&B - influenced track to a more electronica one. She interprets the song beautifully, keeping her own sound while covering a pop song, taking her quintessential rhythmic nature and interesting high-end tones and including them in her minimalistic production approach to the piece.
With each track on EP2, the tone and grandeur of the fulfilling music transports you to a big, vast place as you dance around with the joy of endless possibility, reflecting the city in which it was made. Itâs an EP reflecting ups and downs, sadness and excitement, both sides of life, relatable to all persons. If you havenât checked it out - what are you waiting for?! Click on the Spotify link below!
