D A N G L E
We’re now inviting submissions from anyone who’d like to be involved in Dangle, an upcoming open submission show taking place at Bargain Studio from 22nd October – 6th November 2016.
All pieces in Dangle will be suspended from our ceiling, creating a diverse constellation of disparate objects, concepts and ideas. We hope to involve a wide range of participants, so the installation becomes an immersive celebration of creativity and collaboration.
Mobiles, charms, bunting, objects on strings, anything goes – our main requirement for submissions is that they must be suitable for suspending from our ceiling. We are willing to consider all submissions that could be safely and simply exhibited in this manner. Group submissions and multiple works will be happily accepted, as well as individual and standalone objects.
We’re not setting a theme to the work – it could play with the idea of suspension, be about something important or personal to you, be something you’ve made that you would like to share with others or just be something you think would look interesting suspended in space.
The exhibition will open with a private view on Saturday the 22nd October, providing an excellent opportunity to socialise with other participants over some free booze.
All pieces need to be delivered to our gallery space by Monday the 17th of October, ready for hanging (and dangling).
Posted submissions can be sent to Bargain Studio, 20 Kings Road, St. Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex TN37 6DU.
Works on display will all be documented and catalogued on our blog and Instagram. Exhibitors will be welcome to sell their pieces commission free if they wish.

We’ve long wanted to try a swap shop project and, after bumping into Sean in St Leonards, he prompted us to make it a reality with GOOD FOR ONE SWAP.
Sean ran a successful similar project at Deptford X last year – as an old hand at this sort of thing, he’s been the perfect guide to help us get swap shopping!

The plan is to have it occupy our shop space as an exhibition of sorts until the next gallery show (opening August Bank Holiday Weekend – more info soon!), and we’ll then move it into another space in our building for the remaining months of our tenancy.
Some of our friends have run swap shops with much success. We are curious and excited to see how the people who visit our shop in St Leonards use ours and make it work for them...

PAUSE II PLAY
28th May – 5th June
Bargain Studio presents Pause II Play, a collaborative art project by Amelia Lockwood, Ella Porter, Leonie Sinden and Molly Line.
The exhibition was conceived as a way of exploring the value of materiality to social interaction, in a society increasingly reliant on digital communication and virtual environments.
Each artist has created their own body of work, linked by common themes relating to the physicality and presence of everyday objects, materials and spaces.
Pound shops, digestive systems, elastic bands and disused land are amongst the varied sources of inspiration for the work. The artists seek to overturn any banality associated with these subjects and encourage us to encounter them afresh: removed from their original contexts and transformed through artistic processes – printmaking, sculptural manipulation, abstraction, photography – we are forced to contemplate them and reassess their potential.
From 2–4pm on the 30th May, visitors to the show are invited to participate in a ‘Play Event’, during which they can interact with an installation created by all four artists, consisting of various tactile media and found ephemera, echoing the materials represented in the other artworks. The communal nature of the event – which allows for playful collaboration and dialogue between the artists themselves and between the audience/participants – aims to engagingly manifest and enact the ideas behind the project as a whole.
