Beltany Stone Circle Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland

Gareth Wray Photography Beltany is a neolithic stone circle that dates from around 1400-800 BC and comprises 64 stones around a low earth platform or tumulus, situated at the summit of Tops Hill. One stone is decorated with cup marks and many of the stones stand at an angle after being disturbed around a hundred years ago. There may originally have been about 80 stones. Its hard to imagine that these have been standing here longer than the pyramids in Egypt!

Doll Tor, occasionally known as the Six Stones, is a small stone circle near Birchover, west of Stanton Moor in the Derbyshire Peak District. Dating from the Bronze Age, the circle consists of six standing stones.

Loanhead of Daviot, Recumbent Stone Circle, Aberdeenshire

A ‘moonshiners’ stone circle - these stones stand as a testament to their builders’ interest in the rising and setting of the moon in the southern sky, the recumbent slab and its guardians framing the moon when viewed inside the circle itself. Cremated remains were also found at the site, including the remains of a man only partly cremated and clutching a stone pendant.

This place was an unexpected find. We’d tried unsuccessfully to find loudon wood stone circle. Maps and signage were wrong and we spent a good few hours wandering through eerie, lifeless plantation woodland looking for the stones, joined by an also unsuccessful biker trying to find the same place. And after speaking to a farmer who when asked replied “Well lass, ahve lived here my whole life and nae ever saw a stane circle up here.” we decided to give up.

On the way back, me sat in the back of the car a little sulky and despondent, the driver spotted the sign for Loanhead and took us up there. I wasn’t expecting much, but as I came to the top of the hill I was greeted with this. Made my day and I admit I fell a little in love with the place. I could see more recumbent stones in the distance...I hope soon I can come back here (perhaps by moonlight too) and maybe find those other stones. Hopefully the field they’re in won’t have a huge irate looking bull in it next time...
