The obnoxious crumpling of plastic forced me to blink. “What??”
‘Welcome back to the land of the livin’.’ I grinned sarcastically, catching the bag of cool ranch Doritos before it fell and crushed more triangles than the boy already had.
‘Y’alright? Zoned out for a while there.’
I hummed, legs twisting as I laid on my stomach, careful not to roll off the roof. Why was there a ladder on the side of this vehicle and why did I think it was a genius fucking idea to climb up it? “Yeah, fine. Just a different type of tired tonight, I guess.”
Eyes looked up towards the blanket of stars above.
That was why.
“So,” chips broke under the pressure of teeth. Tongue licked at fingertips, ridding any evidence of speckled orange and blue. “Trip do you any good?” Instinctively reaching for my glasses ( once fingers were clean ), I slid them off my nose and rested them atop my head. Somewhere by the clumped nest of hair. Scratching at the inner corner of my left eye, I bit my tongue.
He shrugged his shoulders, attention drifting towards something else. Anything else, it seemed like. ‘More questions than answers, but…’ he paused, mouth maneuvering as he licked his lips free of crumbs. ‘Wasn’t all bad.’
Silence fell and shortly, I was listening to the faint soundtrack of Hamilton that played below us.
‘But thanks for comin’.’
“I had fun.”
Eyebrow rose, as did mine. “I mean it! I’m kinda glad you pestered me into going.”
‘Pestered?’
“Pestered. Don’t think I never noticed you hangin’ around and throwin’ around little niceties for the couple weeks before.”
He was sorely mistaken if he thought I hadn’t noticed.
Tugging at the plaid fleece, I yanked at it til I had just enough to wrap to my spine. He didn’t look that cold.
Willing myself to fucking relax, I turned my head, cheek hitting the pillow that held both of our heads. Met with a pair of lips, I cleared my throat. “I know we start drivin’ back tomorrow, but if you ever need—” I swallowed, throwing attention back towards the stars.
‘Just need you to share the blanket.’
I hummed. “No.”
‘Then we go back in.’
“Is this a fuckin’ ultimatum?” I groaned as heads bumped, legs twisting around until I laid parallel to him.
“Asshole,” I muttered, ignoring the quiet chuckle.
“Just so ya know, though, I’m stayin’ out til I’ve counted all of them.”
‘Way ahead of you, Harvey.’
I mentally started counting ( admittedly too quick for my brain to handle ), elbowing him until he wasn’t looking up anymore.
‘Cheat.’
“I don’t know what you mean,” I grinned, careful not to break the cocoon, body finally still.
