Himanshu “Heems” Suri is confused. Heems is an Indian-American artist, entrepreneur and activist from Queens, NY. He wants to play guitar but is too lazy to learn and already knows how to rap real good. Known for his often abstract lyrics and alternative style, Heems was one-third of pioneering indie-rap trio Das Racist. Rolling Stone described him as the group’s “wiliest rhymer” and “most caustic joker”. 

Nehru Jackets, Heems’ first solo offering, was released to positive reviews in January of 2012. SPIN gave the record an 8/10 and it appeared on several year-end lists. The song “Womyn” was placed on Rolling Stone magazine’s best songs of 2012 list. Heems’ second mixtape, Wild Water Kingdom features production from Harry Fraud, Keyboard Kid, Crookers, Beautiful Lou, Le1f, and Lushlife. According to Pitchfork, “Wild Water Kingdom is the most substantial solo project full-length associated with Das Racist to date, because it merges the academic underpinnings of Heems’ ideas with thoroughly listenable rap music.”

Heems is also responsible for founding the independent record label Greedhead Music, which recently launched the artist LE1F, and is on the board of SEVA NY, a Queens-based non-profit devoted to immigrant rights in the community. Greedhead released Das Racist’s original mixtapes and first album, before going on to put out releases from Heems himself, Kool A.D. (Das Racist) and a number of other artists including LE1F, SAFE, Big Baby Gandhi, Antwon, Issue, Lakutis, and Mike Finito. According to Forbes, “As half of indie rap group Das Racist and head of record label/management company Greedhead Music, Suri wants to change the face of independent rap - and make some money in the meantime. He may not be a cash king yet, but he’s far from your typical independent rapper.”
