We are incredibly honoured to have one of Cardiff’s most talented DJ’s and producers as part of the Basskicks team. He’s been causing quite a stir within the ghetto funk scene recently- with regular appearances on DJ Spinforths and Hong Kong Ping Pong’s Soundcloud scour, and he even came runner up in the 2012 Ghetto Funk production contest. J-Sound really is making a name for himself this year! He has already had his First release on ‘The Winners Ep” for Ghetto Funk records and we’re all desperately awaiting his next release on Boombastic Jam in September. He’s played along side world renowned DJ’s such as A-Skillz and DJ Moneyshot and he’s always smashing it down at local venues like Buffalo and Full Moon bar as well as many other venues across the UK. J-Sound is most certainly one to keep an eye on!

Introducing J-Sound!

Basskicks: So J-Sound it’s been quite a year for you and you have been attracting rather a lot of attention indeed- lucky we found you when we did ey? What have been the highlights so far?

J-Sound: Yeah, this year has been a huge year for me, never really expected things to happen so fast. The biggest highlight of the year, so far, has to be finishing runner up in The Ghetto Funk Production Contest 2012. This also brought me my first release on 'The Winners' EP on Ghetto Funk Records. But none of this would have been possible without first being noticed by DJ Spinforth and being featured on his Weekly Soundcloud Scour.

Basskicks: You’ve been producing some absolute treats recently can we be expecting even more in the future?

J-Sound: You can definitely expect more from me in the future. My next confirmed release will be coming out mid September on Bombastic Jam Records. Its a remix I have done for Fuzzbox Inc. I'm also working with some very talented vocalists right now so lots more exciting stuff to come in the near future.

Basskicks: If you could play anywhere where would it be?

J-Sound: If I could play anywhere it would have to be at the Shambhala Music Festival in Fractal Forest, British Columbia...Pretty much the biggest event for Dj's/Producers of Ghetto Funk. Although, Chai Wallahs at Glastonbury would be a very close second!

Basskicks: Do you have a set planned for the Basskicks launch or are you a bit of an improviser?

J-Sound: I like to plan as much as possible i.e. I like to know what I'm going to play and what tunes work well together but I also like to have the option to change things up as and when the crowd needs. Ghetto funk is a versatile genre and can be quite chilled or absolutely banging, which is another reason why I love it so much.

Introducing the smiliest resident we have, Mr Mikey Nitro! He’s been DJing since he was 14 years old and he’s been a bit of a genre hopper. He started off playing UK Garage and then discovered house music and drum and bass but now he plays anything and everything, so you can expect too hear some eclectic sounds and good vibes coming your way in September! Mikey Nitro is also a resident at Cardiff Tea club and Ten feet tall so you don’t need to wait till September too see him smash it!

Meet Mikey Nitro! (Interview by Maisie Burrows)

Basskicks: So mikey what’s you favorite kind of cheese?

Mikey: Lionell Richie? He can be a bit cheesey but you’ve got to love him haven’t you

Basskicks: Yes he produces some cracking dairy products! But your favourite cheese? Seriously I would like too know

Mikey: Well, being from the billy-banks I’m going to have to go with cheese strings, or brie

Basskicks: So it’s a tie between Lionel Richie, Cheese Strings and Brie?

Mikey: And Camembert, sorry that was a tough question

Basskicks: So I see your choice in cheese is nearly as eclectic as your music choice! But on a serious note what was it that first got you into mixing?

Mikey: I remember hearing Ripgroove by Double 99 when I was a kid, and knew I needed to be involved in this type of music somehow, I didn’t even know what type of music it was, but knew it was doing it for me. Then when I was about 13-14, I heard about DJing lessons at the local leisure centre but you had to be 16, so I lied about my age, I look about 10 now so they must have known I was lying. And the rest is history I suppose!

Basskicks: So you started lying at young age, that’s interesting Nitro I’ll be weary of you in the future! What was the first record you ever bought?

Mikey: Vinyl or recording? Please say vinyl, the tape is too embarrassing

Basskicks: Vinyl, but now I really want to know the tape as well

Mikey: Well I was lucky because I was given some records to get me started with my first set of decks, by the decks previous owner, but the first record I went out and bought myself would be between Rewind by the Artful Dodger and Mas Que Nada by Colour Girl and PSG, do u really want to know the first tape?

Basskicks: Yes

Mikey: OK, it was Stay Another Day by East 17. They were ghetto though

Basskicks: Oh Yes, Ghetto indeed Mikey!

Mikey: I liked it so much I went back to Woolies for the album the same day

Basskicks: So now we know about your deceitful and slightly embarrassing past but what are you most looking forward too this year? (Music scene wise of course, I’m less concerned with any new houses pets or jobs that are on the horizon)

Mikey: Honestly, its got to be Basskicks, playing along side JFB will be the pinnacle for me so far, and there’s so many more big names to come, its really exciting. We've got some exiting things happening at Cardiff Tea Club too, and the whole Cardiff scene in general is looking to be getting better, I’m hearing about new nights starting up and artists (like j-sound to name one) putting Cardiff on the map. Releases wise, I’m really looking forward to the new Calyx and Teebee album, the promo's that have surfaced this far are next level.

F-Block is a Dj from the Diff known for his loud shirts, stupid dancing and erratic genre-hopping. With a penchant for ghetto funk, reggae, and drum 'n' bass he can be found at any venue with a ban on Rihanna (Buffalo, Clwb, The Moon Club), as well as ripping up festivals including Beach Break Live, Wakestock and Glastonbury. Expect a lot of surprises at his Basskicks debut...an entire live stage show is in the works.

Introducing F-Block! (Nick Cotton

Basskicks: So we’re all guilty of over playing a song from time too time, Which track are you rinsing right now?

F Block: Oo, there’s a couple of tunes I can’t stop playing this year. Todd Terje’s ‘Inspector Norse’, everything off Die & Break’s ‘Grand Funk Hustle EP’ and Slynk’s ‘Bad Duppy Walk’ which I’ve put in my Basskicks preview set.

Basskicks: We here you get about a bit F-Block? Not just in the Cardiff scene but all around the UK especially at festivals. Wheres the best place you’ve played?

F Block: It’d be hard to top the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury, but some of my favourite gigs are the ones in tiny venues! Give me Undertone over a massive venue where nobody cares any day.

Basskicks: The electronic music scene has gone through some crazy phases recently we’ve been introduced too and smothered by dubstep, house and disco have been reunited and we’ve seen a growing return of garage. What do you think this year has up it’s sleeve? Do you think that ghettofunk is going to be gracing the ears of more humble ravers?

F-Block: Definitely. Everyone I know seems to love it, yet it’s never on the radio, so I think it’s just ready to bubble over. Also, folks are going on about Moombahton a lot at the moment, which is the same tempo as a lot of ghetto funk, so it slots in perfectly. It’s all about 110bpm next year!

Basskicks Begins...

We've been keeping quiet for some time now but our secrets are all slowly starting too spill out!

So here we are- Basskicks and it's a pleasure to meet you good sir! If you've been keeping an eye on our facebook page than you'll know that we have already promised to bring you funky beats and naughty basslines but we're going that extra bit further, aren't you lucky buggers ey? We will be keeping you up to date with all of our happenings, think of this as our online diary where u can meet our residents, hear our thoughts, keep up to date with the Cardiff scene, read interviews with our headline acts and most of all keep your ears happy with our residents newest mixes and best picks!
