re-watching the original trilogy is great because you really get a sense for how weird luke skywalker is, just how quickly he becomes that weird AND how quickly he commits to it. Like he's honestly pretty chill in a new hope, but the absolute INSTANT he figures out he can move shit with his mind he goes full send on the cryptic off-putting bullshit. Walking around in full black robes, speaking in riddles, aura farming and backflipping whenever physically possible. He's clearly annoyed when he first meets yoda in empire, but he dismisses that pretty quickly in favour of ALSO becoming an over-dramatic space wizard. The combination of his two teachers being yoda and obi-wan kenobi and him being the son of anakin and padme creates the single most intense and fundamentally kind force sensitive perfectly embodying the heart of the jedi order whilst also serving egregious amounts of cunt and being bizarre to be around. He would have THRIVED as a jedi master during the high republic. he would have been every padawan's favourite and every other master's worst nightmare

I was able to convince my sisters bf who is also a big star wars nerd (but doesn't like the Disney canon / sequels) to not only watch the Disney trilogy again with an open mind, but also that Darth Vader wasn't fully "redeemed" to the light side until after his death, not before. And when I tell you I felt like Star Wars Jesus after..

Star Wars fans, especially those who didn't like the sequels when they came out, YOU NEED TO REWATCH THEM.

I'm not going to say they're perfect movies or anything, but I just saw someone say Rey had "no character development".

Rey? REY?? You mean one of the two characters in those movies that had clear, consistent character development throughout all three? Really?

Rey in 7 is brash, confident, self-serving, but scared.

Rey in 9 struggles with imposter-syndrome! She's much more empathetic! And, well, still pretty audacious. By the time we meet her again in that movie she is very different from where we saw her in 7 & 8.

And if you jump to "oh well that character development happened offscreen", so was Luke's, Anakin's, and Cal Kestis's. In fact, Luke was SO different between 5 and 6 that they made a multimedia project in the 90s to help bridge the gap because it's such a large leap. And don't even get me started on what TCW did for Anakin.

She changes a LOT over the course of 8. There's no way Rey's character at the end of 7 would try to redeem Ben like she does in 8. I'd say her changes in 8 are comparable to Luke's in 5.

Again, I'm not saying these movies are perfect but. What??? Rey?? No character development?? Did you watch the movies with your eyes closed??

This is an excerpt from a larger essay I am working on, I though it would be a good idea to post it:

"Although Yoda clearly identifies fear, anger, and aggression as the dark side of the Force, and warns Luke not to use the strength that flows from them, as they will rule him and he will forever have to bear the consequences of what he has done under their sway, many fans and critics have distorted these teachings. The dark side is often asserted to be a malevolent metaphysical force or principle of wickedness that operates through fear, anger, and aggression. In the Expanded Universe novel Heir to the Empire, Timothy Zahn even altered Yoda’s teachings, writing, “Fear and anger, Yoda had often warned [Luke], were the slaves of the dark side.” In the 2000s, Matthew Stover spoke out against what he identified as the “dark-side-is-the-devil” perspective in the Expanded Universe, attempting to steer the narrative back toward Lucas’ canon. However, a few years later, in James Luceno’s The Unifying Force, Luke declared, “Anger by itself is not of the dark side,” and nevertheless insisted on fighting to “eradicate” the dark side, calling it “Evil” itself. Moreover, video games such as Knights of the Old Republic II portrayed drawing strength from the dark side as calling upon a mystical entity for magical powers through anger and aggression.

This interpretation resonated with those who may have been raised to believe that anger is always wrong, that feeling it is itself a moral failure, or that anger must be suppressed lest one face punishment in the afterlife - however, it does not match with the original cinematic portrayal."

Random comment because I just said it twice and it comes to mind (lol) but I don't think the line "only a sith deals in absolutes" is really an absolute. Its an observation. Sure, he says only, but he's right. Sith only make their decisions with dramatically stubborn and exaggerated reasoning. Look at what Anakin said before,

"If you're not with me, then you're my enemy"

That is the most black and white way to make a decision, to look at the world (or in this case, Galaxy). It's exactly what the Jedi preach against. To search for nuance, hear every word, hear all reasoning, and then and only then make the most selfless decision that harms the least amount of people.

To do that, you have to be able to point out the people who are viewing the world in black and white. You have to call them out for their clear immaturity. Sure, you don't necessarily have to be a Sith to deal in absolutes but contextually I just think calling Obi-Wan's line an "absolute" within the context of the actual conversation is a little silly and near-sighted.

I've been wanting to draw some Imperial villains for a while, but I just could not think of a way to draw them as imposing and evil that hadn't been done a million times before. So I decided to knock them down a few notches instead.
