Founder of the infamous Monster Raving Loony Party, David Edward Sutch (better known as Screaming Lord Sutch) presaged much of the shock rock antics of seventies and eighties musicians with his horror-themed performances. This track in particular stands the test of time.

'Subtle' is not really the word I would normally use to describe this sort of track, but in the context of contemporary musical tastes, where dubstep artists compete to be filthier than sewage pipes, Mono/Poly's music is masterfully restrained. That the bass drop/beat is not even the most impressive part of this track should tell you something.

An accidental discovery from YouTube, this doowop-ish reinvention of Beethoven's Für Elise is a hip happ'nin' number as it is, but mistakenly played at a slower speed (as happened on the YouTube video) gives this terrifically spooky result. Barbara's vivacious vocals become a bluesy masculine wail.

Taking his cue from Boards of Canada's apparent hiatus, charismatic producer Lone provides us with synthy, heavenly soundscapes underpinned by suave beats and other production artifacts from the golden age of hiphop.

This is a Jesus and Mary Chain reinterpretation of the most famous song from Björk's pre-Debut career. Originally championed by the likes of John Peel, Birthday was a peculiarly stark little ballad, and J&MC's contribution capitalises hugely on its ethereal powers.

Named after a two-headed Mexican circus performer, this Icelandic foursome led by twin teenage sisters Jófríður and Ásthildur makes acoustic folk-pop so delicate that it takes five listens just to get all the way in. But then you're hooked.

A former architecture student, Kouhei Matsunaga now makes his name as an artist and musician. I'm not really sure what genre to call this - micro-hop? Minimal dubstep? Whatever it is, it's glitchy, very subtle but has a great beat.

One of the nominees for the Sound of 2011 (I don't understand how this guy didn't win), James Blake's music is one of the most convincing attempts to show soul in electronic music. This track in particular is made all the better for its restraint and simplicity, the song decaying with each refrain.

At the risk of boring the die-hard Radiohead fans who have known this track for yonks, I'm sharing this here as I've only recently found it myself. Reportedly recorded by Thom Yorke at home on a MiniDisc recorder, this gentle piano ballad in many ways exemplifies what Radiohead has done for music.
