Song Review: Edie Brickell and Paul Simon - “Mr. Lee” (A Night for Austin)

For three minutes during “A Night for Austin,” Edie Brickell and Paul Simon were Bobbettes.

The wife-and-husband duo performed the one-hit wonder’s one hit during the June 10 fundraiser, which raked in some $600,000, and showed off their unfamiliar sides in the process.

With she on electric guitar and lead vocals and he on acoustic and harmonies, Brickell and Simon were clearly having a good time. And their obvious joy infused the loose performance with that unknowable something that makes certain live performances - even imperfect ones - sparkle.

Lecture 3: “Mr. Lee,” by The Bobbettes, an all-female group consisting of five young women – all school friends – from Harlem, was the band’s biggest hit. “Mr. Lee” catapulted The Bobbettes into the Top 10 in the summer of 1957. The Bobbettes recorded for a time on the Atlantic label, and then bounced around to different labels: Triple-X, RCA, Victor, Diamond and Mayhew. The Bobbettes eventually broke up in the early 1970s, but they were a trailblazing female act of the 1950s, even if they didn’t enjoy the same level of success as their male contemporaries at the time. They would set an important precedent for numerous so-called “girl groups” that emerged in the 1960s.

WHY I LOVE THIS SONG: My parents were children in New York City in the 1950s, so I have a romantic view of the time and place. But the story of the Bobbettes is one about the possibilities of the early rock & roll era. Simply put, five teenagers from East Harlem wrote an unflattering song about their school teacher and (after some lyrical modifications) had it go to #6 on the Hot 100, and #1 on the R&B charts. The Bobbettes were also in the vanguard of the girl group sound.
