A quick observation about Shiro and the Black Lion’s bonding moment in the S2 finale: right before Shiro retrieves his bayard from Zarkon, there’s a montage of images showing us how closely he and Black have bonded. It’s all memories of their time together, and most of it’s pretty standard stuff that you’d expect, depicting their close relationship over two seasons.

There’s Black rescuing Shiro from robeasts and dino-dogs:

But… one of the memories is… a bit different:

You guys. You guys. The Black Lion remembered the time they made a Voltron cheer-pyramid and Shiro said “and I’ll form the head”. This is one of their important bonding moments. THIS NONSENSE RIGHT HERE is something the Black Lion (and possibly also Shiro) fondly looks back on as a time they bonded.

Like… how funny must this have seemed from the Black Lion’s point of view? Imagine Black standing on top of the cheerleader pyramid laughing uncontrollably to herself in whatever language giant robot lions speak.

Shiro: “Is everyone bonding and focusing?”

Black Lion: “I love you but this is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever done.”

☄ there was a lot of hesitation initially when it came to bonding – on both sides. shiro was certain that he didn’t deserve to be the pilot of any of the lions, let alone the black lion, and he was so sure that once she got a look at everything in his head, she would reject him entirely for the disgusting being he is. kahlee was afraid to let anyone else in, was worried that taking another paladin would result in a repeat of history, and she still felt a strong connection to zarkon, despite everything he’d done.

their bond… grew differently than the others’ did. despite knowing himself to be unworthy, shiro had immediate trust in kahlee. this was a big factor in what made him able to see through her eyes so quickly, and be the only one out of the paladins to manage such a feat during the initial training days. kahlee was slower to trust implicitly, but it was easy to see the good in shiro, see his earnestness in wanting to bond and to work together to protect the people of the universe. this was why she allowed him to bond with her to a degree, though it did of course take some work for them to fully bond – part of it was her having to be given proof that zarkon no longer considered her anything but a weapon while shiro held her with respect.

☄ kahlee is the most aware of anyone on the castle of how little shiro sleeps. in the beginning, she tried to encourage him to go to bed when she found him up in the middle of the night, but was quick to understand the reasons that he couldn’t sleep and would fight sleep off. she no longer lectures him about the importance of sleep ( though there are still times when she tries to encourage him to bed ), and instead, when things aren’t hectic or busy, the two often nap together in various locations around the ship. her presence helps shiro sleep more soundly, even if it is only for an hour or two.
