It really irked me to see how outraged everyone got over Trump's mockery of the US women's hockey team.
It was very disappointing to see our women's hockey team be treated like a punchline after all the hard work they did.
But I was not surprised at all by Trump's behavior or even the behavior of the US men's hockey team. If anything, this was expected.
Trump deriding women is very much his brand. Nothing new there. You had to be living in a cave to not know this. I was more surprised by the reactions of fellow Americans.
For various reasons, two-thirds of the entire country refused to vote for Kamala Harris. That's a lot of people. A huge amount. That's also why Trump won despite only 31% of the population voting for him. And incidentally, this is also why people from other countries get annoyed at Americans when we say: "we didn't vote for this!" when the truth is most of us didn't vote at all. It's misleading to say: "we didn't vote for this", because it implies you actually did vote. But most of you didn't.
We all knew what Trump was like and we all knew he was ahead in the polls back in 2024 and that he would very likely win. And he ultimately did. When most of us decided not to vote at all, we essentially said via our actions (or really, inaction): "We are fine with the possibility of Trump winning again, for in our eyes, he is no different than Harris".
Okay then! But then you don't get to be surprised when society becomes a corrupt, misogynistic, sexist hellscape, since according to you, there's no difference.
It's so strange to get mad at the US men's hockey team for behaving exactly the same way we did in November 2024.
We as a society are certainly not leading by example for our young men.
The United States just showed the entire world that we would elect a man who rapes women and children to be president of the United States over a woman who has worked in all three branches of government, has decorum and class, and has never cheated on her husband nor had sex with minors.
Why are we holding the US men's hockey team to a standard we won't even hold ourselves to?
