The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

As the OP of this post, I’m going to threaten that if this gets to one million notes by the 10 year anniversary on 1 June 2026, one year from today, I will get a lower back tattoo of the loch ness bear monster.

Some people think they can say they "can't stand children" with the same tone as if they said they can't stand dogs or something.
Yes, some children are ill-behaved, some are even hateful but you don't get to say you can't stand a whole category of people without consequences. It's like saying you can't stand women, or people over 75. It should not be a normal thing to say.

I just love how curious star trek is.
The media is filled with so much "omg we discovered extraterrestrial life there what if it wants to harm us" but in Star Trek the response to finding new life is always like wow. What do you think they are like?
How do you think they feel right now? Do you think they know of this conflict? Should we ask them for the way? Should we offer them our help? Open a channel. Let's say hello.
And when they're met with suspicion or hostility their response is never to assume badly of an entire species. It's almost always "How do I show them that I'm a friend?"

It kind of fucks with me that somebody killed ötzi the iceman because ötzi himself is like whatever but the silent presence of human hands that drew back the string of the bow that shot the arrow that killed him is crazy. the idea that there were various people involved in that situation and while one of them has had his last hours painstakingly reconstructed and studied to no end, the others now only exist insofar that an arrowhead had to get into his shoulder somehow. imagine killing someone and then suddenly your entire existence is only a vague shadow implied by the fact that you killed them. much to consider
Testing the mummified bone marrow of ötzi to figure out his ancestry whole time there’s definitely another person, maybe more than one, standing in the room with us but I can never see or speak to them because I only know them through the assurance that they were there too in the form of one single arrowhead. I hate prehistory so much it’s unreal

We have learned so much from studying Ötzi's body and equipment. We know his physical appearance, his sex and age, his injuries and illnesses, his ancestry, his clothing and tattoos, his survival tools and weapons, his lifestyle and material culture, his cause of death, even his last meal and his voice to a degree -- enough to fill a whole museum, just from one man.
One thing we don't know, and probably never will? His name.
(Fun fact: Ötzi's body is preserved in a climate-controlled room in the South Tyrol Museum at -6°C. There is another such room in the hospital of Bolzano in the case the main one breaks down. That means that Ötzi could still be urgently hospitalized, despite having been dead for 5300 years.)
Turns out painting loosely is a pefect activity in between inking comic pages to reset my brain, it's like it tickles exactly the opposite parts or something. So I ended up working on this a tiny bit more during breaks >.<

Once again I’m thinking about the symbolic meaning in Michael’s hair, particularly in season 1.
Young Michael before and after she started living on Vulcan.
When she’s living on Vulcan, and trying to suppress her human self, she straightens her hair and has it in a Vulcan bob. When she’s been in Starfleet for awhile the bob disappears but she still straightens it.
When in prison she starts getting a more natural hairstyle, but still have it short and pretty practical. Then eventually we get to her season 4 look.
While in real life these changing looks can mean completely different things for different people, the changes here do have a clear connection to the narrative in Discovery. A narrative of self discovery, of becoming a more complete person if you embrace different parts of yourself. Of stop trying to be something others want you to be and forge your own path.
There’s no denying that before Michael there were vanishingly few instances of black women wearing their natural hair in Star Trek. So it’s worth pointing out the symbolism and also how Michael’s hair is used to signify the journey of her character.
It has felt almost meta at times when I’ve watched Discovery, since Star Trek itself has been so bad at letting the few black actors they’ve had to grow their hair in a way they want. Avery Brooks fought for years to be able to shave his head and grow a beard, which he thought was culturally and personally very important. The producers thought it was “Too street” (!).
Nichelle Nichols (RIP trailblazer space queen) had to fight to be able to wear an afro in The Motion Picture because the writers claimed it was “Too modern”:
Anyway, what I’m saying is Michael’s journey chronicled through her hair is as much about Star Trek itself as it is about her.
