Adeline’s mother grew up in heavy poverty stemming through her entire life. She wanted to escape it by any means necessary. Going to the city, she encounters a charming soldier whom she believes she has fallen in love with. Only a mere lie she told herself to feel less unsympathetic about using the man as some golden ticket in her hands. Yet she felt nothing towards the man, only seeing him as a fool and the one to lead her out of the life she deeply detested.
Marrying him, she had discovered he wasn't a high-ranking soldier as he had boasted about. He was quite low-ranking and often would disappear on her without any explanation beforehand. This greatly angered her, she wanted a luxury lifestyle not a housewife to a useless husband who was barely around.
Plotting once more, she decided to follow another tunnel to perhaps escape her way out of poverty. Even if it was more of a longer wait game for her. She decided to attempt to have children, for her own logic: giving birth to a strong male son, he will rise and bring her out of this low life. Unfortunately for her and the time period, she had lost her sons she had attempted to raise. Having to grieve many times, and have them be buried. Part of her knew deep down she was truly grieving the idea of her possible golden ticket being taken out of her cold hands. She badly wanted out of this hole she believed she was stuck inside.
When delivering her final chance of a possible ‘son’ to lower herself to maybe get a chance at the life she had always dreamt of. Adeline was born, a baby girl who was quite small. At first, her mother didn’t know what to think, never had she thought about wanting a daughter. The doctors gently advised her not to get too attached, for she might not live long. Due to some small health concerns. Which to her, she didn’t even think twice about.
Yet Adeline was the only child who would make it even with her low chances of survival. This upset Adeline’s mother. For she didn't want a daughter, she often projected her own heavy issues onto Adeline. Always being distant and cold to her, knowing that in her place could have stood one of Adeline’s brothers. Often she referred to Adeline as some sort of runt of the family.
Adeline growing up would notice many things. For once the heavily empty house. If you could even call this half-worn-down place a home. The halls were filled with coldness, yet her mother was much colder than the winters she tried not to freeze due to the thin blanket she would have to use. Often little Adeline took comfort in the chicken coop. She thought they were quite lovely to spend time with. As for the chickens would seem to be the only comfort and consistency she had in her life. She cried when her mother sent her to sell them.
Growing up, she often wondered about her father. Trying to get closer to their mother, she did attempt to ask, yet her mother refused to mention that man or even lend her any information on him. Adeline resorted to her imagination. Perhaps her father was some hard worker, one who needed him to always travel. But he will come back and make up for the lost time spent away. Yet she never received the opportunity to meet him.
To please her mother and earn her affection by any means possible. They started going into town to take on jobs. Adeline's mother took note of this. Adeline was excited, thinking perhaps her mother would be appreciative of Adeline. Perhaps she will be kinder, yet whenever Adeline would arrive home empty-handed. Their mother would get mad, demanding that they go back out and not come back unless she had made something. Adeline of course not wanting to upset her, did what she was told. It became a pattern. (At times sleeping in the old abandoned chicken coop.)
Growing up, Adeline grew to strongly carry the words her mother had fed her through the years. Often she avoids making connections, or even speaking her mind. Being more closed and worrying often about being able to provide for her mother. Yet she wanted to work hard, to be able to still please her.
Adeline went into town one day and as luck had it. Adeline ran into this older woman, who was in some trouble. Adeline offered to help her carry her suitcase. The two bonded the entire time to the lady’s home. Which had Adeline surpassed, she’s never seen such a beautiful home this close up. As Adeline was about to leave, the lady held her hands tightly. Offering her a job, at first it sounded too good to be true. Why would this lady want Adeline to work for her out of the whim?
Adeline hesitated, yet she asked to think it over. As she went home, she thought about the woman’s offer. To become a housemaid for her, not any maid, but her personal assistant. Looking over at her mother, she knew getting this job would mean consistent meals. Especially during the harsh reality the two lived together.
Heading into town, she took the job. It was great, the pay was amazing. She took care of the lady and assisted her with everything. Rumors started, how the older lady used Adeline as some sort of charity work. How she only gifted the job to Adeline to make herself look better. Adeline didn’t want to believe these rumors, yet she wasn’t stupid. She knew they had truth to them. Yet the pay was too much to walk away from. As well as the older lady starting to feed into Adeline’s parental issues. Claiming she saw her as the daughter she never had. Adeline leaned on these false words in slight comfort, due to her deeply wanting that affection.
Time passed, and she barely spoke to her actual mother. Due to her becoming busier and hardly being able to travel back and forth from home to her job. Slowly earning a small room at her boss's home. Someone she learned about and met through her boss was Claudius. This gentleman was often busy, and when he got home he seemed to always be doing something work related. Adeline shared a few words here and there with Claudius. Yet her strong instincts yelled at her that he was no good. Something about the other seems off. Even if he kindly smiled at others, he shook their hands respectfully. There was something behind him. Yet she didn't have proof, so she just tried to avoid him. Focusing on attending to his mother. Luckily for her, he was rarely around. Only when coming back from missions. Boasting and having fancy parties.
One day tragedy struck, as Claudius sent for their mother to be evacuated. Knowing there was something going on. Not giving anyone deport details. Claudius' mother held onto Adeline crying about needing to take her, Adeline was shocked. Yet she agreed to go with, not knowing this was mainly her boss's idea in if anything goes horrific. Adeline would be used as a scapegoat or a shield for her. Adeline and her boss were about to make it, but unfortunately (karma…) a caníbal made it to her boss. Adeline in shock, and fear watched as she got eaten. As other soldiers who were trusted by Claudius attempted to save the lady but it was far too late.
Not knowing what to do now, and knowing Claudius will definitely not be pleased by this news. The two men took Adeline to Claudius. Explaining what had happened. Claudius was of course not pleased, yet he openly somewhat admitted that he wasn’t really upset that his mother had passed. Just annoyed about what this means with having to deal with it later. Adeline was automatically drafted into the team. Due to her still technically being employed by Claudius.
I might change things!! But this is the solid backstory I have for Adeline. Also if you’re wondering why it’s longer than Clarence’s backstory…. It’s because she’s my first gnbp OC!! I had her longer and developed her with my other OCs and friends' OCs!
If you guys have questions let me know. And thank you A LOT for reading this…💔
I was gonna talk about how she meet my other oc Laporte but maybe I'll discuss that on his end since I want those stories to focus on my ocs and let them have their own proper spotlight
Also the flowers on Adeline’s mothers are Snowdrops + Asphodel meanwhile Adeline’s flowers in her drawings are yellow Carnation !!
