On this day, 22 November 1980, Leeds Women Against Violence Against Women held a demonstration to protest police inaction around the Yorkshire Ripper murders and the proposed curfew for women. Around 500 protesters marched through Leeds where they blocked traffic, attempted to storm a TV and radio station, smashed windows at the university, fought police and journalists, and attacked a cinema which was showing a film involving Ripper-style killings of women. sometimes i see the “btvs should have ended after s5″ discourse and i just… thank GAWD every day that it didn’t. how how HOW could the end of buffy’s young life have been the end of that show? just twenty short trips around the sun. how could buffy have ever been a mere five years of giles’ life? i know people think s6 and 7 are subpar and everyone’s entitled to their (wrong) opinions, and those seasons are not without their major faults but i just cannot overstate how important it was for me that buffy subverted that final narrative, the Foundational “She Alone” Lie that the shadowmen and the council told for thousands of years, throwing little girls onto the universe’s sacrificial altar. i could not have handled that acceptance. buffy summers is not a comet, she’s a solar system’s central star, she’s a sun
