Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB)

A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) is an Electrical Switch that automatically switches off the electrical circuit during an abnormal network condition, resulting in overload and faulty conditions. We use an MCB in a low voltage electrical network instead of a fuse.

Earlier, we protected against over-current by using fuse wire (indeed, we used to sell it!). The principle was pretty simple - over-current would quite literally 'blow' the fuse wire by rapidly heating and melting it, thus breaking the electrical connection and, in doing so, protecting the rest of the electrical circuit.

Working & Operation of MCB

Under normal working conditions, MCB operates as a switch (manual one) to make the circuit ON or OFF. However, under overload or short circuit conditions, it automatically works or trips so that current interruption occurs in the load circuit.

The visual indication of this trip observes by automatic movement of the operating knob to OFF position. This automatic operation MCB can be obtained in two ways, as seen in MCB construction: magnetic tripping and thermal tripping.

Under overload conditions, the current through the bimetal causes it to raise its temperature. The heat generated within the bimetal itself is enough to cause deflection due to the thermal expansion of metals. This deflection further releases the trip latch, and hence contacts get separated.

In some MCBs, the magnetic field generated by the coil causes it to develop pull on bimetals such that deflection activates the tripping mechanism.

Under short circuit or heavy overload conditions, a magnetic tripping arrangement comes into the picture. Under normal working conditions, the slug is held in a position by a light spring because the magnetic field generated by the coil is not sufficient to attract the latch.

When a fault current flows, the magnetic field generated by the coil is sufficient to overcome the spring force holding the slug in position. And hence slug moves and then actuate the tripping mechanism.

A combination of magnetic and thermal tripping mechanisms is enforced in most miniature circuit breakers. An arc is created when the contacts start separating in both magnetic and thermal tripping operations. This arc is then pushed into arc splitter plates via arc runner.

These arc splitter plates are also called arc chutes, where an arc is created into a series of arcs and, at the same time, energy is extracted and cools it. Hence this arrangement achieves the arc extinction.

Uses Very high inrush inductive currents such as small transformers, UPS, small motors, pumps.

A motor starter reduces the load and torque in the powertrain and electric current surge of the motor during start-up. It is a protection device that overloads relay functions and integrates circuit breakers. It protects the electrical motor from short-circuit, overload, and phase loss. After detecting a short circuit or overload, the motor starter disconnects all phases from the supply and isolates the motor from the supply. In addition, motor starters increase the device's reliability by reacting quickly. Finally, it protects load-side circuits against damage.

How does a Motor Starter work?

A starter is an electrical device used in turning the motor on and off easily. For example, we can turn the small motor on and off with the manual starter. The hand-operated lever is operated manually by moving the contact position and turning it on and off. The disadvantage of a manual starter is that it has to be restarted in a power failure. In other words, both its actions are done manually.

Occasionally such a position can be caused by the motor winding force due to the high current being carried in the motor. Due to this situation, this starter is not used much. That is why other alternative motor starters with protection, such as automatic starters, are used instead.

Automatic starters use electrochemical relays and contractors, which are used to switch the motor on/off operation. When powered, the power passes through the contactor coil and forms an electromagnetic field, which pulls or pushes the contacts to connect the motor windings to the power supply.

The starter uses pushbuttons called start and stops, which cause the motor to start and stop. Next, the contractor is de-energized using stop buttons. Then coil leads to de-energies. Thus a spring is used between the contactor's contacts so that the contactor returns to its original position and the motor stops working.

Solid State Relay Working

The working of the solid state relay can be understood by categorizing the solid-state relays into two categories. One is the AC solid state relay, and the other is the DC solid state relay. It consists of one input and output terminal. The relay's inputs and output are attached to the specified terminals. When a specific control signal is provided to the input terminals of the solid-state relay, the ON and OFF function on the output terminal is performed accordingly. After attaining that function, the switching function of the relay is turned ON. Then, with the help of the coupling circuit in the solid-state relay, a channel is formed between the input and output of the relay.

This coupling circuit also performs the cutoff function in case of unwanted or uncertain situations, set initially before installing the relay. Optical couplers are used in the coupling circuit of the solid-state relay. The optical couplers have good sensitivity, higher response speed, higher input and output insulation levels. The load used in the solid-state relay is a LED used to match the level of the input signal. The output is either "0" or "1" in the solid-state relay. The output of the solid-state relay is connected with a computer for interfacing.

In the case of the DC solid state relays, there is no snubber circuit and zero-crossing control circuit. Instead, a transistor with a larger value is used to switch the solid-state relay. Another working principle for this relay is the same as the above working principle.
