He felt as if she was baiting him, but he couldnβt leave her to believe that. He couldnβt live with the fact that she thought he was that selfish, that he would ever want to be. βI want Elena to be happy. With or without me,β he began, his whole point summed up in those two sentences. βI never wanted to put this town in danger. I never wanted anyone to get hurt, especially those Elena cares about. I guess what Iβm saying is.. itβs not really a sunset if I canβt give her everything she deserves and keep the people she loves safe.β But if his words fell on deaf words, or if it would take Bonnie some time to take them for what they were worth, he just nodded once more β accepting that this wasnβt going to just disappear. βIβm sorry about your grams, Bonnie.β
βShe may be happier with you, Stefan, but sheβs safer without you.β Bonnie felt the need to point out, though she appreciated how much he cared about her best friend. Itβd be a lie to say that things hadnβt looked up for just a moment whenever Stefan Salvatore had rolled into town, Elena seemed truly happy for the first time since she lost her parents, and the way she felt about the vampire was more than evident. He was good for her, and maybe she was good for him, but with everything else going on, and how complicated it had all become, she couldnβt deny the obvious, or at least, what she thought was obvious. She didnβt react to the second comment he offered, though she did hear it loud and clear. His last comment though, that one she couldnβt ignore. βIβm sorry doesnβt change anything.β she bluntly replied, though she relented only a moment later and offered βThanks. Iβm sorry too.β
