This is my finished presentation for my final piece. I decided to create a story board using my final photos and using font to make it look more alive. I also decided to create 3D cubes with my photos on and putting them in a vase with fairy lights. I thought this would look original and creative. I added fairy lights because of the whole " painting with LIGHT " theme. I think this just adds a little something extra to my presentation. Overall I am extremely happy with the outcome of my individual presentation. I think it looks creative, original and bright. I also think it sums my project up very well.

Lecture 5 - Protest

This is the final lecture in the series. This lecture was based on the word Protest. Protest is an important part of the art and design theme. I personally didn’t know how I could connect this lecture with photography as no photograph was spoken of.

The Teenage Rebellion happened in the 1950’s within the USA. This was the first time when teenagers had finally become recognised and now had an identity. Beforehand they were named ‘adolescence’ which just meant that stage between childhood and adulthood. This is where life became recognisable for their behaviour, language and attitude. We were then shown a clip of a film James Dean stared in called ‘In Rebel without a Cause’. This is about Dean’s character to start growing up and to throw his childhood away and become an adult though developing his identity. This reminded me of Bruce Davidsons work of the Brooklyn gangs. This is when Bruce Davidson read up on the New York City teenage gangs and wanted to get into contact with them. Davidson got in contact with a gang named ‘ The Jokers ‘. Davidson would photograph them daily. This would show the reality of being in a gang.

In the 1950’s America went through the period of modern jazz. Jazz would allow musicians to be themselves and define their own music style.

Jackson Pollock is the artistic skilled version of jazz music. In the 1950’s Pollock developed a new to way to produce paintings. This was completed by dripping a paint brush onto a canvas. These became known as ‘ action painting ‘ due to them being referred to being like a performance. Pollock has said that all of his work is about expression and expression with feelings. He said there are no mistakes within his work.

The 1950’s America was full of racial segregation. This would consist of black Americans being treated in secondary positions. A key event that occurred relating to the racial segregation is Rosa Parks refusing to give her seat up to a white passenger. This became a large issue at the time and Park got arrested and convicted of disorderly conduct.

In the 1980’s within Britain the government allowed Britain to be a base for nuclear weapons for the war. This mainly consisted of missiles. This is when the women’s peace protest started in order for peace amongst the world and to stop wars. On the 12th December 1982, 30,000 women held hands around 6 miles of the RAF base in order to protect the choice of American cruise missiles there.

Street artist Banksy showed us that there is a whole range of national and international political issues. Banksy uses stencils to create his pieces of art. The photo below shows a boy sewing clothing. The union flag is used to make reference to Britain and slave labour. This is never made to public knowledge but this issue is becoming critically worse. Banksy’s approach to the street art world is making un looked upon issues serious. Because nothing is being done about it.

Painting with light group photoshoot

These are the final produced images that we created when doing our group painting with light shoot. I personally love these photos as I feel they look completely weird and fascinating.

Painting with light allows photographers to capture so many different aspects. And every photo can be completely different.

We used glow sticks to create these photos. We felt this would work best as they’re bright and colourful. We took these photos in the photography studio and made sure all the lights were off and there was no light getting in.

I think it will be interesting to layer these painting with light photos along with my painting with light photos.

Powder paint photoshoot

These are the final photographs that we captured as a group at the powder paint shoot. I edited these photos on Photoshop CS6 in order to add some life and definition to the photos. I am very happy with the outcome of these photos as I feel they portray ‘ Play ‘ in many ways. As a group we decided that a large use of colour is important as it allows the photo to stand out and it makes a photo look more fun.

I think that powder paint is a interesting and un noticable way to ‘ Play’ it gives off the childish effect but it also shows that paint is associated with being playful aswell as artistic.

I’ll be using these photos for my final presentation.

Painting with light solo shoot

These are more of my photographs captured for my painting with light solo shoot. I decided to experiment and created various other photographs that Ii thought would look interesting. I used 2 models for this task as I needed a model to stand completely still and another model to do the painting. I decided to try and create a sillhouette photo where my model would draw around my other model in the hope to create an outline of a body. This didn’t go aswell as expected but I am stil happy with the outcome as it looks messy and effortless.

I then had a go at trying to create wings on my model. This went better then planned and I am very happy with the results to these photos. My camera settings were F 10, Shutter 8 secs, iso 200.

And finally I got my model to write the word ‘ Food ‘ this way trying to keep to the word ‘ Eat ‘ as I want to incorporate within my final presentation. I feel that it’s slightly difficult to make out but as an overall I am extremely happy with the outcome of my solo shoot photographs.

These are some more of the painting with light photographs that I captured. As a group when we did our group painting with light shoot we didn’t actually capture any photographs of the buildings like our initial idea. Therefore I decided to do it in my solo shoot. It became difficult to try and do detailed buildings so I made my model draw simple sky lines so I could get the inital outline of the buildings. I am overly happy with the outcome of my photographs as I feel they capture building shapes extremely well. I will be using these in my final presentation as they represent ‘ Play ‘ extremely well.

These are some photographs that I captured of painting with light. I decided to do this as a solo shoot and in order for me to have more painting with light photographs for my presentation. These were mainly practice shots to ensure my settings were correct. Instead of using glow sticks / torches I decided to use sparklers. I feel that this just gives off a different effect and looks alot more messy which I like the look of. I am really happy with the outcome of these photos.

Michael Bosanko

When gathering inspiration for my painting with light photoshoot I came across Michael Bosanko, who is a light painter photographer. Light painter photographers are fairly rare to come about. I feel that it is such an underrated fun form of photography.

Bosanko has created various pieces of work based on buildings and skylines. As one of our ideas as a group was to produce painting with light photos in the style of buildings in curzon circle Bosanko’s work instantly became iconic to us. I find that the simplicity behind his ideas are so creative yet original. I love his use for mixed colours as it gives more dimension to the buildings. It almost creates a 3D effect.

Bosanko has other light painting pieces of work alongside his buildings. One of my personal favourites is the photo above called ‘ the kiss ‘ I am in love with this photograph. I think the idea is so simple yet created in such an obscure way. I really like that he gives the drawings life by creating human poses within his work. I feel that this is a good approach to creating more life like and realistic photographs. I also love the use of colour. He’s kept it simple by choosing to use 2 colours so this allows the viewer to focus on certain parts of the photo.

I’ve found Bosanko’s work very inspiring and helpful. I have definitely gained lots of inspiration from his work.

When going down to the canal in Curzon circle I noticed a particular piece of graffiti that stood out to me. I’m not 100% on what it reads but it’s something along the lines of ‘ AFB ‘. I really liked this piece of graffiti as It was colourful and simple. I felt like it stood out to me more than advanced graffiti art.

I decided to have a go at drawing our words ‘ Eat ‘ and ‘ Play ‘ in the style of graffiti. I found this is playful and an exciting way to get to grips with out area. I made my graffiti bright and bold so it stood out.

Personally I love graffiti. I think it’s a nice way of expressing feelings and artistic skills within a community. It’s bright and bold and allows areas to stand out and pop. I think that it can bring life back into a dull location.

I decided to take a look at drawing in form of refelection. I cut a photograph in half from our selected area and decided to draw the other half in reflection form. I found this to be quite ‘ Playful ‘ And as play is one of our words to focus on, I relate reflection with children. I decided to sketch this in black biro as I wanted to keep it key and simple as possible. I am personally fairly happy with this drawing as I feel as I got the message of ‘ playful ‘ across.

‘Eat’ logo design

For this project our words are ‘ Eat ‘ and ‘ Play ‘. As a group we have focused on only ‘ Play ‘ therefore I wanted to find a way to use the word ‘ Eat ‘ as an opportunity to play around with my illustration skills. My basic idea behind this logo design is because our area is named ‘ Curzon Circle ‘ I wanted to have a circular food item in the middle as Curzon has a roundabout in the centre. I decided to draw various food items around the doughnut as I look at Curzon as a community. And as a community you need to help on another to stay together. As Curzon is currently having various amounts of work done around different places I feel that you can keep it going as long as you’re helped by your peers.

I firstly chose to do this drawing in colour as I wanted it to stand out and look appealing. I then decided to use white pencil crayon on black card as a form of looking at mixed media. I personally prefer the colour version as it pops off the page and makes the items of food stand out more.

This is a poor illustration I created of our selected area of Curzon circle. I used pencil and minimal black biro. I wanted to draw our area instead of printing a photo off. I feel that this helped me to get involved with the physical side of things. I am a lover of art even though I lack in skill.

Playing with font

As font is an imporant factor to graphic design I thought I would have a go at playing around with font and creating something based around my words.

I chose to focus on the letter ‘ E ‘ due to one of my words being ‘ Eat ‘. As we haven’t focused on this word within our project I felt like I would somehow experiment with the word and see what it turned out like. For the first letter ‘ E ‘ I solidly based this on food. Therefore I decided to do doodles of food inside the letter in black biro. I am extremely happy with the outcome of this sketch as I feel that I could somehow incorporate it into my final piece. I feel that as a group text is something we touched the surface of so I wanted to look into it further.

For my second ‘ E ‘ I decided to go for a different approach. I based this on our key area of ‘ Curzon Circle ‘ and I also included the painting with light idea into it. I personally prefer my other sketch as I feel it was more full on and allowed the letter to stand out more. Although this letter ‘ E ‘ is more designed on our project instead of just a word.

I feel that trying to involve this into my final presentation would be a good idea as it would show that i’ve experimented and come out of my comfort zone of photography. I personally enjoy learning about other subjects as I feel i’ve grasped new skills from it.

Rekha Garton

When researching powder paint photography for inspiration, I came across Rekha Garton. Soon as I saw her powder paint shots I instantly fell in love with her work. I love that her photos are so bright and colourful as it draws me in and fascinates me greatly. I found these particular photos really helpful towards my project as her photos include both powder paint and smoke bombs. This led me to gather vast inspiration from her work.

I’ve noticed that her main key aspect of these photographs is her attention to colour, and how she mixes colours to create brighter photographs. I feel this could help us as a group to produce some interesting photographs. I am also a big fan of her smoke bomb effects. This can make a photograph look completely different and can really add to the photos.

This is one of my groups photoshoot a based on the word ' Play ' with our model Charlie. As a group we created multiple mind maps in order for us to define the word ' Play ' in depth. Due to it standing for so many various things from different people's perspectives. As a group we decided that it would be fun to use sports as a key idea behind one of our shoots. As Niall already has a background in sports photography we found this a sudden advantage for our group. We felt that skateboarding would be a fun way to to show ' play ' and we felt that it could be more interesting to photograph. We wanted to create cinematic shots with a depth of field. To do this you mainly shoot with either the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM or the mighty EF 300mm f/2.8 L USM. We also decided to use baby powder as a substitute for smoke. This still gives off the effect of smoke when photographed. This shoot was captured at six in the morning in order to get a cold feel to the photos. For the smoke bomb photos we shot late in the day when the sun was setting which worked extremely well in producing an sort of ‘fire’ atmosphere alongside the rusty red brick work at the canal with the deep peach smoke grenades.
