Lately I’ve been getting a lot of ask’s about the ‘how to’ of film soup, which is very cool. It’s good to see people getting into film.
So yea. In short: do whatever you want.
Add any ingrediants you have in your house (Alcohol, lemon juice, deodorant, food colouring etc) and just go from there you. Burn the film, boil it, I know of a guy on here who soaks film in rivers and oceans. Add any amount of ingrediants, boil it for 10 minutes, boil it for 10 hours. I’ve had some really cool results from setting film on fire, soaking it in pond water, crushing flower petals etc. Go with your imagination, its all just experimenting and having fun. Don’t be afraid of ruining the film - that’s kinda the point. There are a hell of a lot more photographers on here who do film soup, and get some really awesome results. I made a list actually not too long ago. There’s also stuff on flickr etc. I added captions onto my photos to give you some ideas.
If you’re nervous about doing it though, just get some super cheap film and use it up in your bedroom or whatever. Make some soup and go from there.
What I will say though on developing: In my experience, 1 hour photo labs (snappy snaps, boots, jessops etc) and the like aren’t too keen on developing film you’ve fucked with. I know some people have managed to have it developed there, but if you’re gonna try, I’d always tell them that you’ve messed with the film. I don’t know the first thing about developing film, but better safe than sorry, y’know?
