It’s that time again beardos! Our gorgeous, sunny day turned to storm clouds and rain, ruining all our planned outdoor fun.
But that’s okay, because now we can bring you another original review! This time we would like to talk about the newest beard balm we purchased – Happy Beards!
Happy Beards is a small operation based out of Amish country in Ohio. Now, being Michiganders as we are, we usually try to avoid our “armpit” neighbors down south (Haha, only joking of course!), but this beard balm was just too good to not support!
It arrived quickly in the mail and was ready to use right out of the tin! We could smell the natural aroma of the shea butter and the essential oils immediately, though mild and not too overpowering, the balm has a natural woodsy/grassy scent. Masculine and refreshing at the same time.
Since we’re speaking about the shea butter and essential oils already maybe right now would be a good time to mention the other ingredients in Happy Beards.
According to the Happy Beards website the list includes:
Beeswax – The health benefits of beeswax are almost too long to count. But we will discuss a few here now.
Beeswax contains high levels of Vitamin A, which provides long term moisturizing for the skin and hair follicles. It actually helps “lock” moisture in allowing it to continually hydrate and nourish your skin and beard throughout the day.
It is anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory so it helps soothe irritated skin, helping combat itch, skin peeling, and dandruff – a beard’s worst nightmare.
Beeswax is used to achieve style or simply to control beard-frizz, but it also stimulates beard growth. So not only are you controlling your beard from frizz but you are also helping it grow!
Judging by the softness of Happy Beards beard balm we are guessing there is not a lot of beeswax in their balm, in fact we were told by the owner, Ron, that they pride themselves on having “just enough Beeswax to keep the core ingredients unified for a Happy Beard!” Less emphasis on beeswax is one of their mottos. And that is more than okay with us! We don’t care for really thick beard balms, only because I like my own beard to have some natural flow-in-the-wind type of deal, so the fact that Happy Beards can do this for us is why love it.
Almond Oil – Almond oil has a wide variety of benefits for your skin and beard. It is low on the comedogenic scale, which means that it will not clog your pores, and that it can penetrate deeper into your beard and work its way down to your skin to moisturize.
It relieves dry and irritated skin, heals rashes, acne, and combats dandruff. It also removes impurities from your skin, fights free radicals, and helps wash away dead skin cells.
Shea Butter – Shea butter is also extremely beneficial to your skin and beard. It has impressive healing properties thanks to the high levels of fatty acids it contains. It heals rashes, dry and peeling skin, is good for stretch marks, insect bites, and sore muscles.
It is high in Vitamin A and E which helps protect against free radicals (smoke, pollutants, etc.) and even has some mild suntan properties helping protect your beard from harmful rays.
In short, it is a wonderful “natural” conditioner for your beard.
Argan Oil – It is used as a skin softener, beard moisturizer, and beard conditioner. It helps repair damaged hair and split ends. Argan oil is also good for acne or dry, irritable skin. It also has mild taming properties so it also helps control beard frizz.
Jojoba Oil – Oh, jojoba. Jojoba oil is amazing for your skin and scalp because it’s molecular structure is so similar to sebum, the oil that your skin and scalp produces naturally! Because of this it is readily accepted by the skin and beard.
It hydrates the beard follicles from the inside, thus it is great to prevent “hygral fatigue,” the weakening of your hair by constantly getting wet then dry then wet then dry.
It adds volume to thin or patchy beards. It is also an emollient, which means that it can seep into cracks or damaged hair to help repair and strengthen it.
Coconut Oil – Coconut oil reduces the protein loss that occurs in damaged beards, thus slowing down the hairs aging process to keep your beard looking young and healthy. Coconut oil repairs split ends. Helps stimulate hair growth and “fills-in” patchy areas of beards.
It offers a cooling sensation for irritated skin and reduces sweat. It combats dandruff, and conditions and nourishes your beard.
And Essential Oils – These are not listed so they must be pretty sacred. We can assume that they are beneficial to your skin and beard though, or maybe they are used primarily for smell.
As for how the beard balm actually works, we were surprised by how soft it was. It almost feels like a blend between a beard balm and a beard butter. Must be the use of “Just Enough Beeswax.”
It comes out of the tin easily and works well between your palms for application into your beard.
It comes in a “wide” ‘n “stocky” 2oz tin for about $17. We love that the tin is on the wider side because it is easier to hold in our giant hands and it is easy to grip to unscrew the lid. It is “stocky” so it can be easily carried in a deep pocket or a backpack without an enormous and uncomfortable bulge.
The smell is not too overpowering, in fact it is on the milder side so men who do not like heavily scented beard products should be satisfied. What aroma it does have is a manly, natural, woodsy scent with a hint of grass or a lush field.
Happy Beards beard balm also doesn’t leave an annoying residue on your hands that is hard to get off, it goes right from tin-to-hands-to-beard nicely. And because of the “softness” to the shea butter the balm penetrates deep into your beard to where the real magic happens.
In fact, we were so pleased with this beard balm that we let our friend Brad try it on his beard, and he was so pleased that he went out and bought a tin of his own that very next day.
We hope he had enough sense to join Happy Beards’s mailing list to receive 20% his first order.
We here at Beard Advisor have the unique privilege of trying out a wide array of beard care products, we like some, and we find some to be okay, but we were impressed by Happy Beards. We especially loved how malleable the beard balm is. We think if you try their beard balm you will also be impressed and hopefully a repeat customer!
Thanks for reading everyone!
