I wish I could’ve just stayed in bed

I tried to have a good day today, but it just didn’t work. It was a bunch of disappointments peppered with moments of hope. Those moments only made the lows that much more painful.

I found this cannon today. It was rusted and clogged. Some of its parts were missing and it will most likely never fire a shot again.

But still it stands guard as if to protect the city it overlooks.

As I sat with this weapon become monument to a war long ceased, I was overcome with an incredible sense of loneliness. I felt like this cannon, once full of purpose and fire, now sitting in the darkness watching the lights of a community that doesn’t even know it still exists sparkling below.
