I’m NEVER on this blog but sometimes I get physically angry that ‘MY ONCE UPON A TIME’ wasn’t a Ben song and that Mal WASN’T the one turned to stone in canon, because how poetic would it have been if it was acknowledged that Ben’s mistakes had just as much impact as Mal’s and that he was letting her BULLDOZE OVER HIS DREAMS AND DESCISIONS because SHE was scared of the isle, effectively talking over him when HE IS THE KING and she shouldn’t have that power over HIS people.

It’s like canon forgot Mal WASN’T the Queen of Auradon yet.

Ben SHOULD have been given the chance to put his foot down and remind Mal that this isn’t her responsibility and the fact that Adam and Belle (whether they MEANT  TOO or not) simply put that on HER because she was FROM the isle is unfair to both of them.

Not to be ~ CONTROVERSIAL ~ on main or anything, but Ben did genuinely love Audrey when they were together. She was his BEST FRIEND they’d known each other their whole lives, and to this day he still cares about her. The only problem was, she loved him romantically, and Ben came to realize that his feelings for Audrey were PLATONIC at best well BEFORE D1 even began.

When he started SHARING DREAMS with Mal, when he started talking about his plans for the isle, he started to figure that out. Ben was a stupid teenage boy who didn’t know how to break things off without HURTING her.

In MY CANON, Ben was never spelled by Mal ( @islecrown​) (this has the added effect of Ben not being able to easily forgive Uma because there is no PRECEDENT for him to FORGIVE someone for using magic to manipulate his mind) and he broke things off with Audrey quietly and RESPECTFULLY. Despite that, she’s still rightfully upset, though it’s not until JUST BEFORE D2 that Mal and Ben even get together.

BUT now here’s the kicker-- under the cut I talk a little about CANON. Since I have a LOT of feels about CANON BEN and how the movies handled his character.

In my opinion, Ben SHOULD NOT be held accountable for how he broke up with Audrey in Canon. It’s been shown in D1 and in D2 that Ben acts ERRATICALLY when under the influence of magic, mind control LOWERS his inhibitions, and he tends to act out more. ‘Did I Mention’ was NOT a lie, Ben was in love with Mal, but he WANTED to tell Audrey PRIVATELY, this didn’t happen because of the spell and it’s single minded focus on Mal.

I believe that after the date at the ENCHANTED LAKE Ben went to tell Audrey what had happened and APOLOGIZED for not having the chance to tell her that things between them had changed, because he knew she deserved better.

He still cares deeply for her, when she came to him to offer to take him back in D3, when he asked if she was SPELLED, it was because to him, she was acting very, VERY different, and rather than admit he hadn’t noticed the changes in her, he wanted to help her if she was being MANIPULATED like he’d been twice before.

The only PROBLEM is, Ben has to see that Audrey has to face CONCEQUENCES for her actions. He wants to leave things as is, but that’s NOT a good way for a king to handle a threat to national security. Audrey said she wanted to hurt them, she said she was sorry, but she still HURT THEM.

Ben can forgive her, but, can she REALLY just. . . be let off the hook like that?

Seems IFFY to me.

Ben was guilty of making mistakes, of being as much a part of a PROBLEM as he was trying to be part of the SOLUTION. With Mal’s help, he would be able to fix a lot of what the problems were, many of which he had never thought of before meeting her. He was LUCKY to have her FRIENDSHIP. . . Maybe someday MORE than just her friendship.

There were a thousand, no a MILLION, things that Ben had wanted to say to her since she took off that day. Soaring away on wings, and he knew where she had been going, but stuck on that boat, he COULDN’T follow her. The way the snide comment from his BROTHER had burrowed under his skin, furious, the anger in him something UNHOLY.

He’d PUNCHED his Beau so hard that the current king had nearly toppled over the side of the boat altogether. He spent the rest of the cotillion SULKING, furious at himself for letting UMA take advantage of him, furious at his brother for trying to turn this into ANOTHER anti-vk rant. But, Evie had said to WAIT, so he waited, he waited until he knew exactly what he’d say to her when he saw her again, and ventured into the moors.

NOTHING had wanted him here. But he HAD to see her.

Ben knew that Gil WASN’T innocent (in many ways none of the Isle Kid’s were) but he could tell from their brief interactions that they could have been FRIENDS if life had turned out differently. Of course, even if that weren’t the case, Ben was no stranger to second chances, some said he even gave TOO MANY.
