I don’t understand why people being able to guess plot twists is a bad thing. Any time I get a comment that predicts what’s going to happen next in my fic, I ride that fuckin high for a week because it means my plot is actually comprehensible and someone engaged enough to figure it out.

Moulin Rouge is great for this

There is a technique called Chekov’s gun which states if the gun is to be fired in act 5 then it must be seen in act one and mentioned in act 3

or you wanna shoot someone show someone with the gun

in Moulin Rouge we know Satine is going to die and we are shown the gun, over and over so we make the ASSUMPTION that Satine is shot, so when the entire hubbub over the gun skittering over the floor and people fighting for it we come to the assumed conclusion that Satine is shot by the Duke - which has all been set up as a reasonable conclusion

Satine has been coughing up blood throughout the movie, she’s shown to be extremely sick with consumption

but we were watching the gun

so when she dies of consumption it’s a satisfying pay off but we thought she would have been shot because we were watching the gun

that’s a plot twist

or if you watch the Limehouse Golem

we follow the evidence and assume it’s the husband and she was right to poison him because we didn’t think a woman was capable of the crimes - our own mysoginy [and that of the characters] wouldn’t see the woman as the serial killer even when the evidence clearly indicted her so we were tricked.

That’s a plot twist

not and aliens attacked because the audience wouldn’t see THAT coming in a fantasy show
