Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

I feel like a lot of people get "All Art is Political" confused with "All Art is made with Political Intentions" which is not the same.

to misquote Hozier - everything is political, if you think it's not its because the politics are supporting you

for example, going to the pub with your mates

before the late 1990s the idea of a group of girls going out drinking was considered unthinkable, good girls stayed at home and married someone they met at work, but loose girls went out dancing to try and catch a man = girls just want to have fun is political, it demanded the right for girls to go out just for the fun of it

gay people were excluded from traditional pubs and bars and so created their own, this is political and the regularity that these bars were raided just because led to the stonewall riots - creating your own place is political

black people were excluded from white pubs and expected to keep to their own joints and were raided by white people just because - gathering just to celebrate their lives became political

but now you can just go to the pub with your friends

but I called on my uncle in a bar in Ireland where he is so often he might as well be a brick, and instead of going into the saloon and asking someone to fetch him for me I went into the bar where I thought he'd be - you could have heard a pin drop ... a woman went into the bar in central belfast that is the haunt of old straight white catholic men. That too is political

so yeah, going to the pub with your mates is political

yes, walkthrough/tutorials etc HELP but you still have to do it to learn

so you used youtube to learn knitting - you can now knit, and the more you knit the more techniques you can use, and even attempting an heirloom knit because you thought you were ready before it humbled you entirely is part of the skill set - because you learn that heirloom = developed by insane people for masochists and you'll never make that mistake again
