The 5 Best Revisions Methods I Want to Start Using
Hi, guys! Whilst planning my next few months to do well on my final exams, I started researching and found a few great study techniques that are a bit underrated. Thus, I compiled a post with information about each one and all the materials you need to put them to use. These are most useful if youâve already studied the material and are now starting to revise.
A. Feynman Technique
This method was coined by Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman. This system works by writing down everything you remember about the topic youâre currently revising in a blank piece of paper. When you get stuck, go back to your study materials. The gaps in your knowledge should be blatant after you finish. Review and simplify. Keep repeating until you know for certain that thereâs nothing left out and youâve successfully learned the topic. :-)
For this method you will need:
Blank piece of paper
Pen/Pencil
B. Spaced Repetition
This method has been gaining traction for the past few years but it still doesnât get the recognition it should. Itâs fairly simple. It consists of time intervals between study sessions, which allows you store information better in your long-term memory. While there arenât set times for when to do your next revision session, Iâd recommend the one by Piotr Wozniak:
First repetition: 1 day
Second repetition: 7 days
Third repetition: 16 days
Fourth repetition: 35 days
This method can be used both through an analog system and a digital one.Â
One of the simplest techniques to implement spaced repetition while using paper flashcards is the Leitner system. First, you decide how many boxes you need for your system. Each of your boxes represents a different study time interval:
Every flashcard starts out in Box 1. When you get a flashcard right, it passes to the next box. If you get a card wrong, it goes back to Box 1 â even if it was on Box 4. This makes sure you are constantly reviewing the materials. Remember to devise a calendar with the dates and boxes you need to revise each day.Â
For this method you will need:
Boxes or simply different colored rubbers to differentiate the piles
Flashcards
Pen/Pencil
If however, you prefer a digital method, Anki is the best option for you. It is available online, on both Windows & Mac and thereâs also an incredible practical app. It uses the spaced repetition method while taking the trouble of having to hand write hundreds of flashcards and remembering when to study each one.
Simply create an account, then a deck in which youâll add your flashcards. The app and website allow you to add images and/or sounds to the flashcards. Customize them all you want. Once youâve finished, save them and check the app every day to revise the flashcards of the day.
For this method you will need:
Anki app (iOS, Android) and/or website
C. Past Papers
Iâve been guilty in the past for not using this method. I got so caught up in my perfectionism that I didnât even want to try. I learned, though, that getting things wrong is not a sign of failure and that persisting until you get it right is the real strength (and discipline) you ought to have. Do not let your procrastination and/or perfectionism prevent you from learning your weaknesses on a topic and not reach the grade you were hoping for.
Time yourself while taking the test and then correct your answers with a different colored pencil/pen so you can differentiate between correct and wrong answers.
For this method you will need:
Past papers
Pen/Pencil
D. Teach someone
This method is really helpful if you have oral assessments and/or your professor uses the Socratic method in class. You can practice your speech and knowledge all at the same time. Find someone whoâs willing to listen to you talk about the topic youâre studying. Even if no oneâs willing, you can still explain the matter to an object in the house. Donât get embarrassed by this! While speaking, youâre organising your thoughts and only when explaining to someone else can you really assess your knowledge.
For this method you will need:
Your voice
Someone/Something who loves you very much
E. Proper sleep & exercise
Yes, I know, these arenât revisions methods. But as helpful as the previous systems were, they wonât work if you arenât sane in body and spirit. Itâs incredibly important that you rest. Teenagers (13 to 17 years old) ought to sleep from 8 to 10 hours every day, while young adults (18 to 25) only need 7 to 9. You should also get fresh air and exercise. This helps with mental alertness, concentration, an efficient memory and a positive mood. Stay hydrated throughout the day. & please, donât skip meals!Â
For this method you will need:
Proper sleep (x, x, x, x, x)
Exercise (x, x, x)
Healthy diet (x, x, x, x)

Woah! [Reddit/sciencememes]
âI hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.â Â Â Â Â Â â ConfuciusÂ
the curve of forgetting
the curve of forgetting describes how we retain or get of information we absorb.
day 1: you go into a lecture knowing 0% and come out knowing 100% of what you know (regardless of whether you know it extremely well or not)
day 2: you did not do any reviewing of your notes from day 1 therefore you have lost 50%-80%
and as the days progress we forget less and less
think about midterms! notice how around midterms when youâre trying to study for something (that you havenât been reviewing for regularly) it feels like the material is VERY difficult and almost as if youâve never learned it before
formula to reshape the curve
within 24 hours of your lecture spend 10 minutes reviewing the material
a week later: it will only take 5 minutes to REACTIVATE the same material
ultimately, you will reshape the curve Â
day 30: by this day your brain will only need 2-4 minutes to recall
information on the curve of forgetting was taken from the university of waterloo (x)
my formula to reshape the curve using the information above
before class: spend 10 minutes PREVIEWING the material.Â
after class: spend 10 minutes REVIEWING the material
do this regularly. this will be your preview/review system for each class.
a week later: try to review a week later. i know that school/life can get pretty hectic, but try to make sure you are reviewing regularly.
maybe record yourself saying some important details/concepts from your notes the night before and on your daily commute to school plug in those earphones and listen to it. i am an auditory learner and i find that listening to my notes before i go to bed and right when i wake up have truly helped me retain information. studies have shown that the best time to study is right before going to bed and right when you wake up.
a month later: after a month, review what youâve learned so far in your class. trust me this will be a very very short review. everything will look very familiar to you and it wonât look as difficult as it used to.
basically your review schedule should be the following:Â
1 hour before learning the material
1 hour after learning the material (or within 24 hours of learning it b/c i know weâre all very busy people)
1 day later
1 week later
1 month later
remember everyone learns, studies, and retains information differently!! my personal belief is that your technique is what matters most. it is not about your innate ability/talent. find a technique that works for you.
more suggestions:
active learning > passive learning
when taking notes use the Cornell method. it forces you to ask questions and summarize what youâve learned.
set frequent, short, review sessions
test yourself constantly! there are so many resources online.Â
people who are under stress have difficulty remembering things so CHILL OUT
donât rush, take your time
repetition is key
practice MAKES PERFECT
group items together
fish, vitamin b12, and green tea can help w/ memory
donât give up. like morrissey said âthese things take time.â

The 100 Days of Productivity Challenge with EmmaStudies!
Productivity challenges are a fun way to help boost your motivation to get things done! â100 days of productivityâ is one of the most popular challenges when it comes to Tumblr and Instagram. As I am planning to start the challenge, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get more people involved! So, where do we start?
What is â100 days of productivityâ? To put it simply, the challenge is to do something productive for 100 days. It comes from the idea that each day, we can do at least 1 thing that pushes us forward. The challenge is meant to improve your sense of accomplishment and show that with a bit of motivation, you can get things done!
What classifies as productive? This is entirely up to you and what you feel is worth recognition. Whilst the majority of study blogs do something study related each day that isnât a set rule. Some examples could be:
studying for an accumulative time of 2 hours a day
decluttering your desk and study space
finishing all your homework
drafting an assessment youâve been procrastinating on
organising your files
sorting through your emails and implementing a filter system
backing up computer files and phone
organising your monthly plan
going to study or read at the library
finishing a book youâve been meaning to read
setting up a file organisation structure on your computer
creating a resume and cover letter
applying for jobs, internships, work experience
spring cleaning your bedroom and study space
organising your bookshelf
unsubscribing from spam emails
collecting account emails and passwords
sorting out your expenses and budgets
deactivating unused social media/email/etc accounts
Obviously, this list has just a few options. You can do anything which you find achieves a positive and organised result! Even if you do something small, you can count that :-)
Does it have to be consecutive days? It can be, but there isnât a rule. Most people attempt to do consecutive days but that isnât always possible. Doing something productive one day after another is great for building your self-discipline, however, you can skip days if need be. If you do, donât feel bad! Remember to bounce back and continue the next day.
Who can join? Do I need to have a studyblr/studygram? It is open to anyone! There are no requirements for joining. You donât need to have a studyblr or studygram! If youâre looking for a fun way to motivate yourself with the backing of other people, this is a great challenge to be a part of.Â
When do I start? Absolutely whenever you want. Could be the start of a month, the start of your school term or for the new year. For this which Iâm setting up as a collective challenge, I am planning to start on Monday 9th October. For anyone who has seen this post before then, you are more than welcome to start the same day! But if you see this afterwards, you can still join and be a part of it - but youâll just be a few days behind, but that is not a problem! :-)
How do I track document my productivity? Most people document their journey through Tumblr or Instagram by posting a photo each day (or every few days). I will be doing this! I will be tagging my posts with #emma100dop which you should too. This way I can see your photos and reblog them too!! As a challenge which I am hoping lots of people can get involved in, having a specific hashtag is great for motivation.
Similarly, it is worth tracking your days on paper. I have created a printable set which you can download for documenting each dayâs work. *Download link here!*
Do I have to share pictures? If you donât want to, you donât have to share. For studyblr and studygram accounts this is a good idea because youâre uploading original content but if you donât have a study account, you donât need to upload any. You can still document your progress with photos and make a gallery on your phone if you want. As mentioned above, I have a printable which you can download for free to track your progress. If you donât want to take pictures, you can just cross off or write down what you did that day!Â
I am really excited to start this challenge with you guys! :-) I think doing it as a collective group is a fantastic idea in terms of boosting and maintaining motivation through the whole challenge. With lots of accountability partners, we should all hopefully manage 100 days! Best of luck! Remember to tag me in your pictures on Tumblr and Instagram!! x
