little old Asian woman saw me taking a break five min into class (i am very out of shape) and spent the rest of class telling me about her chiropractor. even gave me his card. i did not have the heart to tell her i don't believe in chiropractics. i appreciated the sentiment anyway

headcanon / springboard / playing with dolls / sandbox style fan activity is just a different type of thing to analytical / interpretive / close reading style fan activity. they certainly aren't mutually exclusive, I'd wager that most people who do a lot of the former are also incorporating a fair bit of the latter and that most people who primarily do the latter are spurred by passion they get doing the former, but you're kind of not getting it if you criticize one for not being the other. it's like going up to someone's sandcastle and saying "this is shit, this structure is completely nonfunctional as a fortified residence" or flipping through someone's doctoral dissertation to say "so did you forget the cut-out paper dress up dolls or...?"
