but you don’t get it. because do you mean shauna’s awfulness, her meanness, her violence doesn’t make sense? what do you mean ‘where did her softness go?’ ‘what happened her to guilt and vulnerability?’ it fucking gone! her best friend died an avoidable death. her baby didn’t even cry. her baby wasn’t even fucking hers, but a piece in the other’s wilderness cult. her teammates left her alone to butcher the body of a LITTLE BOY WEEKS AFTER SHE LOST HERS. all of their lives were turned into nothing but a sacrifice to the wilderness for the rest of them to survive. they felt entitled to the deaths she held the closest to her heart. of course she’s fucking angry and bitter and borderline psychotic. of course she’s hungry for the title of queen because what else does she have? what else, in the mind of a TEENAGE GIRL, could quell or at least mask some of the pain and make it at least seem worth something? why would she want to go home when her baby and best friend’s bones rested in the wilderness? why would she want to face a reality where she’s nothing but a tragic girl who was in a plane crash with a dead friend and dead baby that no one expect the team even knew existed? why? when she could be something that could never exist back home? fear was all she had felt for MONTHS. why should she not be entitled to be a little feared too? is it right? no. of course fucking not. it’s so unbelievably messed up. THAT’S THE POINT!

Feel like a lot of people missed the fact Melissa, Gen and Akilah were all collectively trying to isolate and kill Shauna, Tai and Lottie, its just none of them managed to actually go through with it. Van interrupts before Gen can even try, Akilah picks up a rock but can't make herself strike Lottie with it, Melissa gets the furthest but looking in Shauna's eyes as she struggles to breathe she just cant quite finish the job. Effectively the three of them and Mari orcestrated the hunt because they thought the chaos of it would be the best way to isolate and kill the people they see as causing the violence and stopping them from going home. The irony being that this means they instigated the violence this time, and, to be clear, this is all without even knowing about Nat, Van, and Misty's plan with the satellite phone. So they can try to say this was all Shauna and Lottie's doing but it wasn't, not when the others deliberately used what they knew of Shauna and Lottie's tendencies to try and benefit themselves, and isnt that what they've done all along really? Used Shauna and Lottie to assuage their own guilt and complicity in the violence.

i keep seeing the take that shauna switched her spot during the draw to purposefully target mari but like. guys, no she did not. no, she didn't give a fuck when mari drew the queen and was even happy about it, but she didn't switch spots solely to target mari. she switched spots because she thought they were targeting her. and yes, everything is up to interpretation and whatnot, but realistically if shauna had thought they were targeting hannah, she wouldn't have needed to ask tai who was meant to pull the queen.

that moment, shauna switching spots, is when we see her starting to form into the overly paranoid version of her we see in the adult timeline. she doesn't take the time after she realizes they're rigging the hunt to think about the fact that hannah would have drawn the queen because she is convinced tai and van were trying to kill her. and tai doesn't correct her on it, either! it's why she says "eat. and remember this." when they're feasting on mari, it's a threat! she's telling them not to pull the stunt of trying to kill her again because it ended in one of them dying instead.

and it adds so much to shauna's paranoia in the adult timeline and why she shuffles the cards herself in the adult hunt. no one ever corrected her that they weren't trying to kill her, so she's lived her whole life still thinking they were out to get her and probably still are.

i completely agree that the finale/pit girl relevation had a compelling twist when recontextualised. the show is all the more enjoyable for the fact that we are being given nuance in the yellowjackets. i also like the choice to make it a tragedy, they wanted the audience to be hurt instead of just indifferent. mari mattered, so her death should matter. it always had to be mari.

but why do you think the returning yellowjackets all made a pact to keep quiet instead of just exposing shauna and lottie? why is hiding the truth so important, to the point where taissa will use jessica roberts to secretly track down her former classmates to see if they've been talking, melissa fakes her death & creates a fake identity, misty happily imprisons jessica and then kills her later, nat uses drugs to cope?

it's because their hands aren't clean either.

i need some of y'all to grasp that you don't need to like or defend shauna or lottie to get this point! its perfectly within your rights to hate shauna's guts - although there's a difference between hate and misunderstanding.

and a damming point of evidence regarding this truth is hannah.

i completely get why from the girls perspective they chose hannah to be the scarifice through van rigging the cards. but from an audience pov, i don't think we're meant to see it at all as justified or something that whitewashes the yellowjackets. vans anguish about choosing someone to die and taissa assuring her it was for the best? that was for the audience.

i completely get why it's being lost on the girls but its so annoying seeing a lot of y'all in the audience.... kind of just excuse/overlook the fact what the girls were prepared to do to hannah as if her own humanity didn't matter? a lot of y'all should be a lot smarter and recognise that hannah was a HOSTAGE who did what she could to survive. yes, trusting her would have been a risk, but i dont know maybe it would have been worth it if it prevented her being hunted through the woods?

ultimately the girls were ready to hunt someone they held hostage (similar to the way they held ben in inhumane conditions for WEEKS because they thought it would lead to them getting home) when it wasn't necessary to overpower shauna and lottie at that moment.

i also doubt mari is going to be the last victim in the wilderness y'all. i think in s4 we're going to see natalie separated from the group and we're going to see why shauna was justified in her words about the others ultimately having "so much fun" (a lot of y'all are also forgetting how they danced around at ben's feast & the way they behaved in s2!)

i love how s3 finale completely flips our perspective on the hunt from the pilot. half of the girls weren’t even hunting. van standing over the pit seemed so menacing in the pilot but now it’s just heartbreaking. mari being pit girl, not because the wilderness chose but because shauna chose. mari was only wearing a nightdress so she could use her clothes as a decoy. and turns out mari was a decoy while the others tried to get rescue. misty removing her mask and smiling not because they caught mari but because they’re getting rescued and there’s nothing shauna can do about it. the hair on the antler queen costume wasn’t a collection of various victims’ hair, it was just mari’s. this whole time we thought it was all the girls collectively giving in to the hunt and the wildness of it, but really it was just shauna, along with lottie and tai. none of them wanted to do a hunt, none of them wanted mari to be chosen.

The hunt really wasn't as simple as people keep making it. It wasn't all the girls vs Shauna, Lottie and Tai but a number of groups with their own plans against them. The main two against being Team Phone and Team Kill, who had no idea of each other's plans.

The teams were:

Team Hunt — Shauna, Lottie and Tai

Self explanatory. They all have their own reasons.

Team TaiVan —

Rigging the cards to ensure their safety and conspiracy to target Hannah due to her being an outsider.

Team Phone — Natalie, Misty, Van and later Hannah

Nat, Misty and Van work together to fix the phone, and realise they need a stronger signal. They are all shown to be confused by the animals dying, Nat even attempting to convince the girls that it means they should leave and is confused when Mari shoots her down. They agree to use the hunt as a cover for Nat to get the phone up the mountain. Hannah discovers the plot and joins by impersonating Nat. Van and Misty are the only ones seen around and knowing when Shauna realises Nat is gone.

Team Kill — Mari, Melissa, Akilah and Gen

These four are seen discussing and creating the circumstances for the hunt by having Akilah poison the animals. Mari shots down Nat's theory on why the animals died and helps give Lottie the idea for the hunt.

Mari gets chosen as the sacrifice. Melissa attacks Shauna and is almost successful in killing her but is unable to. Gen seperates Tai from Shauna by lying and tries to lead her off somewhere more secluded but is interrupted by Van who is confused and she lies (kind off) about her just trying to give Mari more time. Akilah goes after Lottie in the cave and is last seen wielding a rock threateningly, while Lottie is seen afterwards leaving the cave alive.

Team Drunk — Travis

Self explanatory.

Team Unknown — Robin and Britt

Our beloved extras who are seen participating, so they are seemingly team hunt but who knows.

some people are dodging the point so hard. like yes shaunas the "bad guy", shes the one who wants people dead (and maybe lottie too ig) but this story has always been about why its even possible for that to matter. shes literally just one person so why dont they all just refuse to participate? nat does, repeatedly, but no one stands with her so lottie and shauna get what they want. we saw that shauna literally backed down when tai stood up to her, she isnt some unstoppable force.

this is and has always been about passive violence. how being silent in the face of violence, not actively standing up and saying "No" is complicity. tai and van rigging the cards so it will be the "outsider" who gets hunted is complicity. it is commentary on how we allow "fringe" members of our communities to be cast out, othered, hunted, because we're too afraid for ourselves to stand in solidarity with them. but then in the end when the violence comes for you or your friend or your family theres no one left to stand with you because you abandoned those "others" who could have stood with you. shauna and lottie only have the power that the girls give them by being passively complicit in a similar way to how shauna was complicit in tai's plan for allie in the pilot. and so it goes again and again. they all ostracised jackie, watched javi drown, let shauna intimidate and lottie lead them to vote against ben. this show is literally inspired by twin peaks, a story in which an entire town is found to be complict in the murder of a girl they all snubbed every possible opportunity to save. the point is not that shauna is the villian but rather that she is only able to hurt people because the others have created an environment that indulges her worst impulses.
