It is cruel that it's your responsibility to recover now, but you are not to blame. You aren't the ball of embarrassing shame you were raised to be — You're real. You're real and you're here. Love, honey, love yourself. The rest falls into place.

People don't realise how damaging CPTSD is. It's prolonged exposure to abuse that's not always physical. It literally rewires your brain. You spent your entire life in survival mode and have no "old self" to go back to because fear and control was all you'd ever known. Your identity was never your own because your family projected everything onto you, taught you how to think and punished (or at least heavily criticised) you for trying to have your own interests. You get mistaken as scared, scatterbrained, autistic or even stupid in public because your brain is in constant fight or flight mode. It's a chronic condition. You can't just "get over it". You can learn tools to cope, you can make good lifestyle changes, but for many people, it's something that you live with for the rest of your life.
