The results after film was buried in soil for 3 and a half weeks. The flashes of white are where the film emulsion has been eaten away by the soil. In a future experiment, I would keep the film buried for longer and take it out periodically to see different phases in its degradation.

Direct animation on super 8 footage of the Harlem GlobetrottersMusic: Epistrophy by Thelonious Monk

Direct animation experiment: I created this first film by experimenting with scratching and dying a recycled super 8 film of the Harlem Globetrotters. I have outlined the steps below:

1. Cut the film into strips 2. Tape strips to butcher paper 3. Colour and scratch film strips (materials: ink, permanent marker, x-acto knife, sandpaper, etc.) 4. Splice filmstrips together 5. Wind film onto take-up real and project for results

While this was only an experiment, I was quite pleased with the results. I found the brightness of the colors and patterns reinvigorated the old b/w film with the notion of spectacle involved in the source material. I plan to film a digital recording of the full projection to post online and will upload a link to the video upon its completion.

Bleached film experiment: This was my first time bleaching film and I may have gone a little overboard, not realizing the strength of the chemicals. I do, however, like the immediacy of the erasure process that bleach provides, as opposed to slower film degradation processes (soil, water). I hope to experiment more with bleach in a more purposeful and restrained manner.

Burying film experiment: the layers of emulsion will be progressively eaten away by micro-organisms in the soil.  I have used rich soil because it is very ‘active’ and icing sugar to speed up the processes of decay.

Cowboy and "Indian" Film

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, artists from around the world began making art by reworking existing films and using other moving image technologies like video. One pioneer of this new art form is Raphael Montañez-Ortiz.

Richard Reeves experimented with painting on both sides of the film, a technique that he discovered "can create a type of depth of field because the projector will only focus on the top of the film's surface, leaving a slightly out-of-focus background."

Father (2015) by Becca Pecaut

An audio-visual poem using archival super-8 footage from my father’s childhood growing up in Sioux City Iowa. The visuals recall a loving portrait of small-town family life in America’s heartland, steeped in honey but riddled with doubts. A disjointed soundscape accompanies the footage, poking holes in the fabric of the quintessential image of the American Dream. The film prods the boyhood of my father but also of his generation as a whole, subverting its obvious charms in favor of a closer look. Sound by Gus Callahan.

Mother (2014) by Becca Pecaut

An audio-visual poem with an original score using archival super-8 footage from my mother's childhood and wedding to her first husband at the age of 18. Growing up in a traditional Jewish household, marriage was more or less her only option for an independent life. The film tells a fragmented history of a person while the sound creates a meditative tone, imploring the viewer to question the nature of the visuals. Sound by Gus Callahan.
