Dispositif | Murdoch MacLeod

Dispositif is a collection of photographs that observe the forgotten and everyday space in the predominantly Kurdish region of south east Turkey. Using the camera as a tool to explore the effects of power and land intervention, the images seek to question the indirect ways in which space is used to exercise control.

Photographed against the backdrop of the Turkish/Kurdish conflict, the images look at the unobvious, silent spaces which somehow speak so clearly about the socio-political landscape. The area has recently seen a tempestuous rise in violence and ruthless totalitarian power from the state; yet there is a quiet underlying current to those outbursts, which can be seen in the abandoned, urban, rural, public, private and virtual areas of everyday life. Those often-mundane visible markers are seen as points of reference for the project.
