To celebrate the festive occasion of Costume Day, here's a sneak peak at what I've been working on.
The Good, the Bad, and the Gooey
Marshall Copper (Tiger Tabby Slime)
The Glass Desert’s lawman - though no one remembers who gave him the badge. Copper’s more of a legend than a sheriff, wandering the Glass Desert to keep the peace between the rowdy and the reckless.
Calm even in a storm, he's got a voice like velvet. Doesn’t raise it unless he means to end a fight. Most slimes figure he’s too gentle for for his job, but that’s only half true. There’s steel under that quiet. When Copper draws, it’s not for show.
He’s the kind of slime that every outlaw loves to test, every lost soul trusts, and every tale ends up circling back to.
"Slim" McDrip (Cheshire Slime)
Copper’s partner, the quiet "muscle" of the Glass Desert. Slim rarely speaks, not because they can’t, but because they prefer to let their expressions, color shifts, and body language do the talking. Their grin is a local legend: it can mean anything from "good to see ya" to "run while you still can".
They’re immensely loyal to Copper and Miss Kitty, but tend to wander when night calls. Slim's fluid sense of identity shows in their shape-shifting, sometimes smooth and round, sometimes sharp and stretched thin like a shadow. Being an amorphous blob with ears and a tail, they don’t care much about "he" or "she," and most other slimes have learned just to just call them "Slim".
Slim plays the harmonica when they think no one’s listening. No one knows where they got it, or how they make it work without hands - but the sound echoes through the canyons on hot nights like the desert itself is whispering along.
Miss Kitty (Tabby Slime)
Owner of The Gilded Trough, a saloon carved out of an old "Big Slime" freight container half-buried in the dunes. The walls hum with laughter and the faint shimmer of phosphor slimes. Miss Kitty runs the place with a silver tongue and sharper instincts.
To travelers and drifters, she’s all easy smiles, a good host with a flirtatious streak. There's talk she once ran with outlaws in the Indigo Quarry. These days, however, she keeps her nose(?) clean, her secrets closer, and her tavern neutral ground.
And yet, when Copper hops through that door, the drawl in her voice takes on a warmth no one else ever hears.
“Trickshot” (Hunter Slime)
If the desert has a ghost, it’s Trickshot. Once a sharpshooter among the dune patrols, he went rogue after the "Big Slimes" abandoned the Indigo Quarry, deciding that if no one else ruled the sands, he would.
He’s cunning, patient, and ruthless when he wants to be - the kind of outlaw who studies his targets for weeks before making a move. His missing eye is the stuff of legend: some say Copper took it in a fight gone wrong, others that Trickshot gave it up himself in some magic ritual. He never says which.
He wears a scavenged hat - a real human one - with the brim chewed and cracked, shading the glow of his one good eye. His laugh sounds like desert glass grinding against the sand.
Trickshot doesn’t just rob for wealth; he steals for control. Every gadget, every scrap of tech he gathers is another step toward understanding the "Big Slimes". Deep down, though, he’s haunted by something older than rivalry. He and Copper share more than a scarred past - they share the same dream: to protect their kind from rogue TARRs. They just took different paths to do it.
Dead-Eye Nimble (Pink Slime)
The loudest, goofiest outlaw in the desert - and somehow still alive. Dead-Eye earned his name after stealing an old eyepatch and strapping it over his left eye. Claims it helps him "see the truth". In reality, it’s scratchy and impossible to see through - and he keeps bumping into rocks.
A wannabe gunslinger who couldn’t hit a tumbleweed in a still breeze. But he’s loyal to Trickshot, worships the idea of being "dangerous," and has a habit of showing up where trouble brews.
Underneath all the bluster, though, there’s a strange innocence to him. He doesn’t really understand cruelty, just wants to be remembered. In another life, he might’ve been a ranch hand or maybe a bard, telling tall tales instead of living them.
He keeps a pet rock named "Bill". He swears Bill is magical. No one has had the heart to tell him otherwise.
Blood & Dust - a trilogy series (book 1 is split into two parts) with a novella/book series(?) The Crown and the Rift on the way. I just started writing book 3 of Blood & Dust. The Crown and the Rift is based on a dream I had recently.
Spanning from the rugged American frontier days of the newly appointed state of Texas, to the chaotic present day America, Blood & Dust tells the intermittent saga of Alec St.John and his uncle Sheriff Josef Tristram, two souls bound by blood, tragedy, and the supernatural.
So, hey! It's 2025 and I spent the majority of last year writing a supernatural western. I'm currently throwing stuff at the wall for Books 2 and 3, which I had no intentions of starting until my brain went "Yeah, but what if sequel..?"
