Because of ArtFight's recent rule clarification, I've seen discussion on whether tracing your own photos is the same as references them. This is, in my opinion, a matter of semantics. Tracing your own photos IS a method of using them as reference. It is perfectly normal and doesn't hurt anyone.
When it comes to self made resources (photos, sculpture, maquettes, 3D sculpts, etc) and resources made explicitly for artists to use (stock photos with appropriate permission, 3D models in CSP, etc), tracing can be ONE step of using them as a reference. It isn't a "crutch", it isn't cheating.
You can also put the photo up next to what you're drawing, and draw from sight. Or trace the photo a few times, then draw it separately. These all have value for different situations for learning, speed, and accuracy, and I recommend trying them ALL.
Regardless of what ArtFight decides, I want other artists to not be afraid of using this type of reference material in this way. It's very normal in both professional and hobby circles, it isn't harmful, and it doesn't make you a lesser artist. Hope this hasn't ruffled any feathers, keep drawing! <3
Just curious. How long have you been working on magical warrior diamond heart like since conception? I could tell a lot of love has been put into these characters going as far as to focus on supporting characters backgrounds to where the friend group feels fleshed out.
And I know that many focus on making things exist before they're perfect but when did you think was a good time to just make it?

thread is still there, like to Me it became a Serious Thing in 2018 when i decided to go for voice acting, but the characters were all finalized for the most part innnn 2015? 2015 is when i locked in and when the characters all became themselves.
alex's was the last character to get ANY kind of crystal warrior artwork and his garnet heart design didn't get made in any form until 2015, AFTER Amber and Zacharie were added to the roster, even though alex has been a character from the beginning.
its also the calendar the game is using, 2014-2015 and when the story takes place lmfao
So i don't really consider the story as being officially started on before 2015, because they weren't really themselves even tho i made the thread, and i initially intended it being way shorter anyways LMFAO
(that being said there are older scripts from 2013/14, im just too embarrassed by them to show them off 😭)
thats also when the first demo was released!! in april 9th 2015 (which is val's 17th birthday >:3) this is probably the first ever playthrough of it, or at least the earliest thats still up, from the same month the first demo came out.

a particularly inquisitive unicorn, with a penchant for wandering closer to settlements than most unicorns would dare. in a coat of shimmering dark velvet, he disappears upon nightfall, when he can more easily observe the objects of his curiosity.
species swap romick~ unicorns don't have a malicious bone in their body, so by necessity he's Nice. he'd be as competitive and jealous as any other come springtime, but he's not going out of his way to harm anyone the way Romick Classic would be. but he's probably nailed more than his fair share of virgins.
turning characters into unicorns is a bit easier than the other way, so i still need to simmer what laurestine would be. it's not like she has a personality or background to transfer to a human life. she's a pretty horse. she has never been more developed than that lol.
