Boys And Girls Club – Charlestown/Boston
Over the past few months, the FEAT team has discovered several of Boston’s generous charities and mentoring programs, and the selfless individuals who work everyday in outreach in our shared east coast home. FEAT has take full advantage of all that its home base is offering, and continues to look for new ways to give back. This past Tuesday FEAT’s founder, Parker Burr, accompanied by PR manager Bianca Corey, were lucky enough to see first hand all of the incredible programs offered at Boys and Girls Club of Charlestown.
Boys and Girls Club is a nationwide organization that provides after school programs and a safe learning environment, enabling kids to reach their full potential. Upon arrival we learned it costs a family $25 dollars a child for a year at the club, and this cost maxes out at $50 dollars per family. Whether you have 2 kids or 10, you pay $50 dollars for well-monitored, stimulating educational activities and a friendly, fully-staffed mentoring program.
Our tour was lead by 11 year old, Asia, who represented a cadre of the club who proves to be mature, and in turn are rewarded special privileges. She was excused out of normal “rotation” to give two sock entrepreneurs a detailed tour of the facility. Art classes, libraries, quiet rooms, arcade-type facilities, pool and recreation, computer stations, cafeterias, auditoriums, recording studios, were just some of the many stops we made while getting to know our new friends. This is like a school without the classes and teachers, and those aspects you may have ‘disliked’ as a student. Bianca and Parker recorded a cover of Justin Bieber’s, What Do U Mean? on the recording computer in the studio, jammed out with a senior member while playing guitar in the music room, and learned a new variation of the popular billiards game, pool. Safe to say, the FEAT team may have felt as if they were on vacation, rather than a work trip.
They don’t want to go home from the club, and neither did FEAT. This was evident when one of the small tour guides was summoned over intercom for pick up quite a few times, but simply couldn’t bear to leave before he saw the FEAT presentation that had been planned for a bit later. With much regret, he went to his waiting mother, but he was sent home with a pair of socks for his sister and himself.
The auditorium was filled with over 40 students who had shown interest in our FEAT Socks entrepreneur presentation. Some members from the sister club in South Boston joined us for the event. It may have seemed like chaos, but the atmosphere was lit with enthusiasm and excitement to learn about socks! With popcorn littering the room, the presentation revved up and the kids participated in a Jeopardy style game. Their true competitive natures surfaced when the room was pitted –almost unintentionally, girls vs. boys- in a cutthroat competition for the desired FEAT sock prize. After smart discussion, team building, and immense effort, a winner was declared, but no participant went home without a pair of socks. We made friends and shared stories. The kids were able to come up and talk one-on-one with Parker and Bianca, and ask questions about starting their own business. One group of kids explained their recent efforts to make a business of selling paper airplanes to other students. They had even gotten as fair as recruiting other classmates to work for the young business managers, and even earned commission selling the planes!
The FEAT team will be planning a return visit to Charlestown and other clubs, to volunteer, and relive this fun experience. Keep an eye out for more pictures and videos from this trip to the club. Thanks again to our friends over at the Charlestown Boys and Girls for hosting us!
