Canaries, despite being out of use in mines, never escaped the concept of being the warning. After 9/11, people in New York were terrified of chemical terrorist attacks, and bought canaries to the point of breeders reporting barely being able to keep up. During the Iraq War, canaries were considered “the only chemical weapon detector available” in Baghdad. Even now, with canaries being completely unused as detectors, they’re still used as a common idiom to signal danger. Despite escaping the actual threat, canaries are still considered the warning for it, and will never be able to escape the implications that come with their name.
