Why Has 2022 Been Such a Hot Year for Catalytic Converter Recycling?
The past few years have been good years for companies that sell catalytic converter scrap or the metals they contain. The main reason is easy enough to understand. Demand for platinum group metals (PGMs) has outstripped supply for several years. This did not change in 2021/early 2022. Since demand  outstripped supply in early 2022, demand for scrap catalytic converters was strong, at least in the beginning of the year. Demand for the precious metals they contain was robust for 2021 and into 2022. How did the demand for PGMs outstrip the supply and how did recyclers take up the slack? If you know a few things about PGM mining and PGM markets, the answer is easy.
Supply and Demand in PGMs
Mines that produce platinum, palladium, and rhodium have not been able to supply enough of those metals to meet global demand. This situation may be resolving itself, but it created a big demand for scrap catalytic converters. Mining capacity increases slowly. Vast numbers of old catalytic converters and other sources of PGMs existed. Companies looked to the recycled metals market to get the platinum, palladium, and rhodium they needed. Entrepreneurs started collecting valuable parts and extracting those valuable metals. Because recovering metal from those parts is much cheaper than mining new metals, a booming market developed. That boom lasted well into 2022.
Like most any commodity, supply and demand determine how much a catalytic converter costs. The single most important component of the price is the cost of the precious metals the converters rely on. Catalytic converters contain small amounts of valuable platinum group metals- platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The amount varies between about seven and 16 grams depending on the model. Hybrid vehicles need a bit more PGM content. Older converter models also tended to have more.
If you have five catalytic converters with 5 grams of platinum each, you have an ounce of platinum. If you have 500 catalytic converters, you may have two kilograms (or almost five pounds) of platinum and a similar amount of palladium. That metal is super valuable thanks to the global demand and global shortages.
Global Demand for Metals
The PGM market is global because companies around the world need these metals for a variety of products. The automotive industry just happens to be the largest customer for them. Vehicle emission controls use the largest share of platinum mined each year, for example.
Other industries also need small, but significant quantities of platinum group metals. Rhodium is also used in jewelry, electrical contacts, and neutron flux detection, and as a catalyst in other processes. Platinum is also used in jewelry as well as being used in wires, electrodes, magnets, and some cancer drugs. Palladium is not as widely used in industry, but you can find it used in electronics and fuel cells. Â Because worldwide demand for PGMs has risen faster than supply over the past few years, recycling metals from existing sources have become more popular.
The Secondary Market for Catalytic Converters
PGMs make scrap catalytic converters valuable things to buy. This secondary market is well-served by numerous scrap yards, recyclers, and smelters. A few of the recyclers have even launched apps for people who have old parts to sell. Catalytic converters also contain aluminum, chromium, titanium, and steel. Prices for those metals vary as well. But, since an ounce of palladium can be worth more than a ton of iron ore, PGM price increases have a disproportionate impact on converter prices. High demand meant more companies recycled and more car owners and auto shop owners wanted to sell their old catalytic converters. Many of those old converters end up as new converters, but most of the valuable metals end up being used elsewhere. Manufacturers take the metals and turn them into a variety of things. Recycled steel is always in demand by various industries. The same is true for chromium and titanium, both of which converters tend to have in lesser amounts.

How Scrap Catalytic Converter Prices are Set
Market rates for scrap catalytic converters vary quite a bit over time and from one model to the next. This is due to several factors, the most important being the amount of platinum group metal (PGMs) content in each converter. The amount varies from one model to the next. Scrap catalytic converter prices also vary due to various business considerations, such as the processing cost and variations in how much of the PGM content the recycler can recover.
The Main Factor in Scrap Catalytic Converter Pricing
To review, modern catalytic converters perform a three-step process to scrub hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen from vehicle exhaust. Some catalytic converters use a two-step process to clean the exhaust but only vehicles with lean-burn engines use this older design now.
Regardless of that design difference, all catalytic converters are structurally similar. The interior of a catalytic converter contains a metal or ceramic honeycomb coated with a material that holds tiny amounts of palladium, platinum, and (sometimes) rhodium. At a high enough temperature, those metals catalyze reactions that turn those exhaust gases into carbon dioxide and water. Catalytic converter scrap prices depend on the market values of those PGMs.
Platinum Group Metals
A catalytic converter for a car or light truck will probably have 7 to 16 grams of PGMs inside, with old models being near the upper end and newer vehicles at the lower end. Those metals are the main reason anyone buys old catalytic converters. Consider the value of 100 pieces, all using platinum only. Those 100 parts have 1,300 grams of valuable platinum or about 46 ounces. At $969 per ounce, the price on August 15, 2022, that is almost $45,000.
To make the pricing picture just a bit more complicated, hybrid converters and older cars (the mid-1970s to early 1980s) had more PGMs. Though we are talking about three or four grams more in a 1981 Honda Accord versus a 2022 Accord. Diesel particulate filters and diesel oxidation filters also have some scrap value, but you will need to do some research on them; catalytic converter scrap prices for vehicles with gasoline engines are not going to be helpful.
Because catalytic converter prices depend on those PGMs, no group of parts will be worth the same as another. Any 100-lb container of scrap copper is going to be worth the same as another. With catalytic converters, one pile of 100 parts may have 44 ounces (about 1.25 kg) of recoverable metals while the next lot has 50 ounces (about 1.42 kg). Depending on the mix of platinum, palladium, and rhodium in those parts, those six ounces can be a difference of $6,000 or more.
The steel, chromium, and aluminum in a catalytic converter have some value to recyclers, but their combined value is probably going to be trivial compared with PGMs. Compare recent scrap prices for steel and aluminum.

Recovery Costs
That platinum and palladium is not useful until a business can extract them from the honeycomb in each part. The processing costs and the smelting involved all require labor and energy, which costs money. No recovery process is 100% perfect. The amount of PGMs in the catalytic converter may be much less than what the buyer can recover. A damaged core often means less of the material is recoverable by the type that part reaches a smelter. So, the real value of a piece may be based on recovering 7 grams out of the 14 in that part.
In the end, catalytic converter scrap prices reflect several aspects of the recycling business. The time to recover and sell that material introduces some risk. The near certainty of losing some of that valuable PGM content also cuts what a recycler could pay. The recycler and the smelting operation will also want to make a profit on each piece.
For these business-related reasons, a collection of scrap catalytic converters with $46,000 of PGMs may fetch less than $15,000. Therefore, almost any scrapyard or recycler will want complete catalytic converters that are relatively undamaged. If you remove the honeycomb from the casing it is impossible to know what vehicle it came from. This makes a good estimate of the value impossible. A damaged case or one that rattles may have lost some of the catalyst material, and with it much of the part’s value.
Many Factors Determine Pricing for Scrap Catalytic Converters
The valuable PGMs that make them work are the main factor in catalytic converter scrap prices. The business process of collecting, recovering, and selling the metal makes the parts worth much less than the market value of the metals in them. How Much are Catalytic Converter Scraps Worth
The same metals that help catalytic converters turn toxic auto emissions into relatively less dangerous gases make used converters valuable as scrap. The palladium, platinum, and rhodium catalysts may be present in small amounts but at $970 per ounce, you can afford to melt down several cores to extract the metal. The same is true of the other platinum group metals (PGMs) in converters – palladium and rhodium. And the converter core isn’t the only part worth money as scrap.
The Key to Catalytic Converters Cost The most important single component of a catalyst is the honeycomb core where exhaust gases interact with a catalyst and get turned into relatively less dangerous gases. The catalytic function of the converter is thanks to the chemical action of those PGMs, usually just a few grams of them. Given the market prices of rubidium, palladium, and platinum, it doesn’t take a huge collection of old converters to have some valuable scrap metal on hand. Consider some recent prices for each metal(from Metals Daily):
Rhodium - $15,500 per ounce Palladium -- $1,969 to $2,096 per ounce Platinum -- $948 to $976 per ounce
How many converters might you need to recycle to end up with an ounce of PGMs? Well, consider that 28 grams make an ounce and most converters have 6 to 16 grams of platinum, palladium, and rhodium in them with rhodium being one or two grams of the total. The amounts vary by model, but it is realistic to get an ounce of platinum from five or six converters and an ounce of rhodium from 28 converter cores.
What Makes PGMs So Valuable
The key to their effectiveness lies in platinum group metals (PGMs) that promote/catalyze reactions that turn toxic exhaust gases into CO2 and water vapor with traces of other things. The converters aren’t 100% effective but they do make cars run much much cleaner. Rhodium, one of the rarest metals, catalyzes a reaction that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions. Their ability to catalyze the chemical reactions that make car exhaust much less noxious makes PGMs valuable. Their rarity adds to their value as well – rhodium is the most valuable metal in the world while palladium and platinum are not exactly common. Combine being rare with performing an extremely valuable emissions control function and you can kind of understand how an ounce of platinum is worth almost as much as an ounce of gold.
Beyond PGMs
The catalysts inside are the main source of recycling value, but there is more. The oxygen sensors ahead of and behind the converter also contain PGMs. As with the catalytic converter, the type and amount vary. The older sensors contained a bit more of the precious metals. Additionally, the metal housing is potentially worth a little bit of money, being made of steel. Still, most of the value comes from extracting those PGMs from the converter and selling them.

4 Tips for Getting More Cash When Recycling Your Catalytic Converters
Whether you want to remove one part or sell a pallet load, you’ll have less trouble and potentially make more cash by doing it right. Recycling catalytic converters is a booming business, which is both good and (kind of) bad. The good news is obviously that demand for the platinum, palladium, and rhodium in those scrap converters makes it possible to get a decent amount of cash for a catalytic converter. You need to know how to shop around, learn about the parts you have, handle your old parts correctly, and find the right buyer.  Â
1 - Shop Around Before Recycling Your Converters You wouldn’t sell an old car to the first person who made an offer if you had a choice. Right? Trying two or three converter buyers should get you a higher price. This should be easy enough and if you are recycling catalytic converters by the gross, you’ll end up making a good deal more money. Bear in mind that a $10 price difference multiplied by 144 old converters is $1,440. That’s a pretty decent return for doing just a little bit of extra research. Beware! You can undermine the value of your parts by careless handling.
On a related note, understand that there are different ways of recycling your catalytic converters if you have a large number of cats to sell. Normally, you would just sell the whole converter to a recycler. They take it from there. You may also use a company to hedge the metals on your behalf.
2 – Know What You’ve Got You’ll want to know a couple of things about your cat before you go shopping for a buyer. The most obvious thing is the model number. This will be stamped somewhere on the part. Of course, age and mileage may have made it hard to read. Use still wool to give the area a light polishing if corrosion and grime make the part number unreadable.
The not-so-obvious thing you want to know is whether you are holding an original part or an aftermarket part. Aftermarket converters tend to have smaller amounts of PGMs, and you get less cash for a converter with less precious metal in it. You can often tell a non-original part by the arrow stamped on the case, to tell a technician which way to install it.
3 - Handle with Care If you have exhaust systems with catalytic converters, you need to remove the exhaust pipes with care. Do not remove the honeycomb material inside. You might be able to sell them but it will be impossible to get full value for the material. Why? The smelter or recycler doesn’t know exactly what they are dealing with. That means they don’t quite know how much PGM material they can recover.
That is only one of two problems. Another problem is that rough handling can knock off pieces of the honeycomb. The tiny amount of PGMs is reduced even more. Some buyers are reluctant to take damaged honeycombs and damaged converters. So, don’t be too rough, and don’t attempt to remove the “biscuit” at a junkyard or garage.
Cut away the exhaust pipe leading into and away from the converter, as the recycling company will have to do this so, and will make you pay for the extra labor. You’ll also end up better off financially by using a company experienced in recycling catalytic converters.
4 – Go to an Experienced Company An increasing number of scrap yards and recycling companies are buying up converters. Given the demand for those scarce PGMs, this just makes sense. However, not all companies that buy old cats are equally good buyers. This is true for a few different reasons. Some companies may be hoping to buy low and sell high, getting parts for a fraction of what they’d get if they were sold directly to a recycler who knows how to extract the metals.
Always trust your parts and your profits to an experienced specialist. They’ll know how to de-can your converters without damaging the cores. The company will be experienced at hedging the precious metals inside, to get you the best price. Pricing things accurately means having access to detailed information on what different models are worth, and how that value changes with ups-and-downs in the PGM markets.
The main part of your quote will come from the scrap value of PGMs. A catalytic converter with 1 gram of rhodium, 4 grams of palladium, and 4 grams of platinum contains at least $500 in precious metals. All converters contain steel that has some scrap value.

How the Converter Recycling Process Works From Start to Finish
Before the process starts, someone delivers one or more converters to a facility that handles all or part of the process. They remove the core and test it to confirm how much of different precious metals are present. The first step is obviously to remove the converter or converters and ship them off to a recycler. Each part of the recycling process calls for specialized knowledge and equipment, which is why business owners almost always sell their recovered converters to recycling firms like Belanger. Step 1 is decanning
A recycling facility removes the core of the converter. This metal hexagonal matrix contains the valuable platinum group metals (PGMs) that make converter recycling a profitable undertaking. Each converter uses a small amount of precious metals but palladium, platinum, and rhodium are quite valuable. While converters are not necessarily hazardous, the decanning process creates a good deal of potentially unhealthy dust. Clumsy decanning can also damage the honeycomb material, reducing its value to recyclers.
If you do it yourself, you want to have a specialized workspace with the right ventilation and so on. This can pay off if you handle a huge number of converters in a year. Most all scrapyards and repair shops are better off shipping out their converters to a converter recycling facility that may remove the cores and is to smelt the metal. Note that the steel also has some value to recyclers. The oxygen sensors in exhaust systems also have some scrap value because of their PGM content.
Step 2 is evaluation
The recycler will crush the core material and sample it. There are specialized scanners available for this job. This is probably how the recycler will evaluate the sample, versus using chemicals. This is the only way to check the amount of PGMs in the converter. After sampling, the remaining core material has to be melted down. Sometimes whatever converter recycling company buys your cores will melt and process them, but they often ship the material off to another company.
Step 3 is smelting
The cores have to be melted down so the recycler can extract the precious metals. Heating in a furnace is the standard process. It can take 10 hours at 1200 degrees. As with decanning, recovering the metals in a converter core calls for specialized equipment.
Step 4 is recovering the PGMs
Once the melted honeycomb material cools, the recycler will use chemicals to extract the PGMs. Once the palladium, platinum, and rhodium are separated out and weighed, the refiner will sell the metals, which may end up in new catalytic converters. Spark plugs, oxygen sensors, and many electronic devices use platinum or palladium too.
As a seller, you have a couple of converter recycling options, either sell them directly to a recycling firm like Belanger. Or, you can let a recycler hedge the precious metals in the converters for you. Hedging, for those not savvy on financial terms, just means to sell at a set price now and deliver later.
