Leopold Aschenbrenner, June 2024 You can see the future first in San Francisco. Over the past year, the talk of the town has shifted from $1
Something about this almost imperceptible sunset really struck me. It was so quiet and so subtle... yet I was transfixed.
I had been walking, enjoying an early evening made mellow by stormy weather, when I noticed a sliver in the sky to my left. I looked closer and realize the sun was just peeking through, and immediately i wanted to attempt to capture it.
It was a fleeting moment that left an indelible impression in my mind.
I could picture an expansive, brilliant sunset decorating the sky behind the wall of clouds. I wondered, "Who is witness to that display tonight, and where?"
I thought about how easy it would have been to miss, and how most people walking by likely did.
Now, hours later, I think about the poetry of being at the right place, at the right time, to catch a glimpse of something that will never happen quite in that same way again.
I think about how striking bright, blazing orange is against damp, heavy gray.
I think about a moment revealed only to those who were paying attention.
I'm moved.
I think about impermanence. About how no matter how badly I wanted to freeze that moment in time through my camera lens, it was actively slipping away through my fingers.
In fact, by the time I tried to capture it from a different vantage point, it was gone.

Part of what I feel is that art has a role in giving people a reason to go on, and that is an important thing in and of itself.
