messy screenshot from my current roll20 set up for testing my custom Magi Risk game =D
This is a project I started years ago and have been working on updating recently- a Magi adaptation of the classic board game Risk! It included special rules for raising and capturing dungeons to gain powerful dungeon capturer units based off similar extra rules from the official Risk variant Risk Godstorm.
unfortunately, I lost the document detailing some of these rules, so some friends of mine and I have been testing to try and reverse engineer them >> But its been going well! I hope to post an official rule book and the main assets for the game sometime in the future ^^
The map has been recently updated to better comply with canon after the series concluded, since originally this project was started waaaaay back before the civil war arc. Obviously, there were a few liberties taken to maintain balanced gameplay, but I tried my hardest to keep it decently accurate. The base file used was a full world map with just some of the major countries/regions labeled, so certain things that may seem odd (like the tightly packed Magnostadt region that’s so small we have the second zoomed in map) came from that. Larger countries like Kou and Reim needed to be subdivided into territories to make the game playable, but I think those don’t come off as too odd. The real kicker was figuring out where certain countries that aren’t explicitly shown on a map are >> (I’m looking at YOU Sasan) I did as best a job I can, and after some extra research I’m at least happy with where Artemyra is. I’m pretty sure Heliohapt and Carthago would technically be swapped, but for game balancing reasons I left them where they are. Besides that there were a few countries added that aren’t in the manga to fill (mostly in the oddly divided Magnostadt region) I used names from the historical middle east or arabian myths for those. All in all, i think it came out okay. If people are interested, I can do a breakdown explaining decisions for this map in more detail.
if you have explicit sources for the location of countries (manga/anime caps with maps or dialogue commenting on a countries geographical position) I will happily take them as i continue to refine things especially if its for friggen sasan
For the gist of the special rules- like normal risk there are three suits of cards in the territory deck, though rather than being the different levels of units they’re Judar, Titus, and Yunan. The idea is if you have a hand you can turn in you also raise a dungeon on one of the territories on those cards. You can then send units inside similarly to how you would invade a normal territory to try and conquer it. The small square deck in th roll20 cap is a deck that basically just determines how many dungeon monster units your armies have to defeat. the gold deck is a deck of 25 djinn all with unique abilities, so when you capture the dungeon you get to draw one and one of your units becomes a dungeon capturer that lets you use the djinn ability in whatever territory its in. I might break down how I made all the djinn abilities in another post, but also I think a lot of them need some more testing and balancing XD
I may test using rules where you can chose to just discard a single territory card to raise a dungeon there to increase the number of djinn in play, but we’ll see.
there was another special rule regarding unit movement betweenthe seven seas alliance territories since they’re so spread out, but I cannot remember what exactly it was for the life of me, so we’re testing different things >>
as for the set up I used for testing- there was probably something better than roll20, but it wound up working surprisingly well with its custom deck support (even if it was tedious to set up). In the end, we decided to use sets of various characters for pieces after a friend asked why wouldn’t they want 50 Alibabas XD It ended in some great shitposts being born, and wonderful conversations like ”how many Kouhas equal a Koumei” XD the players were Balbaad Rishid/Alibaba/Cassim, Heliohapt Armakan/Sharrkan/Sphintus, Kou Kouen/Koumei/Kouha, Kou Hakuryuu/Kougyoku/Hakuei I was hakuryuu and was losing badly in this screenshot XD
