I think it's interesting how Olruggio says he wants Qifrey to grow up to be a brilliant witch. This reminds me how he mentions a couple times in the light novel there, about how he considers Qifrey to be a magnificent and skilled witch. While Qifrey is certainly talented, this is coming from Olruggio, who is beloved by society for his inventions, making it feel a bit like inflated praise. It gives a bit of insight into how Olly may see him, I guess. That he sees Qifrey as being on his level.

Ok, not gonna deny the possibility of the good old effects of a crush, but like… Qifrey is actually really, really good at magic? I think their talents just shine in very different ways. In fact, possibly Qifrey’s greatest talent is a significant part of what makes him an excellent teacher, in my opinion:

He looked at a spell and IMMEDIATELY knew exactly what he was looking at. Then he quickly devised a way to confirm his suspicions. (Just a quick edit to add on a bit: the panels even seem to imply that Qifrey saw the spell and was able to figure out exactly what seal was used to create it)

The way that I look at it, is Olly is like someone winning science fairs every year of grade school and then going off to MIT to become a world class engineer at like 15 or something. He’s able to see a problem and identify solutions and then create those solutions, which is an excellent skillset for an inventor. Whereas, Qifrey is like someone that can listen to a piece of music once and then recreate it perfectly or see a painting and explain every single brushstroke that created it. He can see an effect and work backwards to very quickly figure out how the effect was created—definitely a helpful skill when teaching students and helping them problem solve based on the effect of a seal gone wrong.

Both are incredibly talented and skilled in their own rights, just kind of in opposite directions, if that makes any sense? I think it’s why they make an excellent team (when they are not being pulled apart by The Horrors™️).

And it’s very possible that a young Olly was able to notice this talent pretty quickly in his closest friend, especially since he seems to have taught Qifrey a fair amount, or at least helped him study. I guess we won’t know for sure until we get more information.

I think too that Beldaruit gets much of the credit here. Olruggio clearly thinks the man is a whimsical pain in the ass, but he gets starry-eyed when talking to Coco about Bel's spellwork and approach to magic. The fact the Qifrey spent however many years being one on one trained by the most innovative witch out there probably goes a long way to him being as skilled as he is.

Qifrey had two very invested teachers, and a desperate, time sensitive reason to get good at it. It's always struck me as a refreshing choice to make one of the two central protagonists of your epic manga (Coco and Qifrey) to be undoubtedly skilled, but not The Best.
