hi i'm charlie and this is my classics blog! it's also my main so you'll see me talking about random things in my life as well. my primary interests in classics are the interpretation of the aeneid and ancient philosophy but i'm also insane about many roman politicians and even more roman poets

Found in the Castro area (acropolis) of Mytilene, Lesbos.

The epitaph tells us that:

'Here an owner has buried his playful dog, Parthenope, in gratitude for the happiness and mutual love that she brought him.'

Parthenope then addresses us directly:

'Having been a friend to my owner, I deserved this grave. Take the example of this memorial, and find yourself a loyal friend who is both ready to love you while you are alive and also care for you when you die.'

my lord. the two statues you commissioned are finally complete. yeah, the double-order with the vast and trunkless legs of stone and the shattered visage. i like to think we captured the sneer of cold command pretty well. it's a really thought-provoking piece my lord. very deconstructionist. i'm sure that even a traveller a thousand years from now could take one look at it and instantly recognise it must have come from an artistically enlightened culture
