"… Don’t touch me.” She is clearly not having Nebilim’s antics right now.

"You know, I don’t think even you could get me out of this. Knowing you, you’ll take advantage of the situation…" She jerks her shoulder away.

"I thought perhaps we girls could have a nice, long chat. Is there anything harmful in that?" Nebilim taps her own chin, grinning like the cat that ate the mouse.

"… Eh… Fine. I’ll go with it for a little bit… Anything in particular you had in mind?"

"Well, what does a bright young lady see in one such as Jade? Clearly you two know each other beyond acquaintances..."

I swear I haven't forgotten about this blog either, but as with my main account it too is on semi-hiatus until my health improves and NaNoWriMo is over. 36,000/50,000 - I feel like I have so much more to write. XD

Semi-Hiatus

Due to health reasons, I am putting this blog and my main on semi-hiatus. I am by no means abandoning it or leaving permanently, but while I'm trying to heal up, I will be less active. Thank you for understanding!

It hurt, it hurt so much seeing her face twisted in pain and sadness like this. What… what if he’d really made a mistake back then? What if he’d really condemned her to an existance in darkness and cold? What if her conscioussness had remained even after her fonons had seperated, her memory particles still forced together by the arte he’d once casted to create her replica in the first place?

No. No. He needn’t think like this. Death was the end of it all, even for replicas. It was the end of existance. Of it all.

And yet… why hadn’t she attacked him yet? Sure, back at Mt. Roneal she had tried to get his approval, his acknowledgement, at first too… but as soon as she’d come to the conclusion that words alone wouldn’t reach him, she’d quickly changed to attack him. Kill him.

And yet… this time she only stood there, watched him…

Jade shook his head, not knowing what to believe anymore.

She couldn’t be real. There was simply no possibility of her being real. So the only thing left, was for this to be an illusion, a monster taking her appearance to lower his guard… right? And yet it still didn’t seem to have any intentions to attack? Why? Why wouldn’t it just finish what it’d obviously set out to do?

Jade swallowed harshly as yet another thought started to form at the back of his mind.

What if… just maybe… this wasn’t a monster after all?

What if the illusion was real, but not the one behind it? What if it was the work of a third party and the one in front of him— the one he was currently seeing as the professor— was actually one of his friends? What if it was Peony, desperately trying to get through to him and snap him out of this all? Would he kill him then, too? Spilling the blood of his sole remaining friend while trying to break free from this nightmare? Finally waking up just to find himself in an even worse reality?

No, that couldn’t be. That just—

"I don’t… I don’t know…"

Nebilim stepped forward, taking each one carefully as if nervous he might attack her regardless of her words. She stopped several feet in front of him. His obvious inner turmoil wounded her; she never wanted him to feel any pain.

"Please, Jade...let me have this minor existence for as long as I will last. I just wish to spend my remaining time with you, my pupil. I am so happy to see the man you have become and the man you are still growing into. I am proud of you."

Her eyes were so melancholy, unhappy, but her lips turned upwards in a real, pure smile.

Complete Darkness

Darkness. That was all Jade could see for a moment before his vision cleared. This area seemed so vaguely familiar—Was this…

… He manages to get to his feet. He felt weak for some reason. He looks around—Indeed, this was the place he’d last seen that blasted replica, before her sudden return. He sees her standing not too far away. He kept his guard up, despite the strange exhaustion he felt.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Nebilim stands not far from him, but she does not look like herself. She is like a super imposed image: one part of her looks utterly different than the other. In one moment, she is as she was when human: dressed in her warm sweater and coat, her face sweet and smiling, her eyes gentle. In another, she is the demon, wings extending from her back, lips pulled back in a mock grin, her long, thin fingers grasping into fists at her sides.

"Hello Jade," she greets him, and it’s a melange of those voices, but the replica’s is always stronger. She approaches him slowly, carefully, though it is clear she does not fear him. Her fingers gently caress the underside of his chin, but she is far gone before there is a chance at retaliation.

The place is cold, frozen still, though the shards of ice Nebilim was once trapped in are broken and scattered. So too are numerous broken weapons, some hers, others of people gone astray. 

But no matter what she keeps smiling at him.

Jade simply stared, tense, but never letting it show. His arm in front of him to draw his spear if necessary. He could tell she was trying to torment him and mess with his mind again, moving from her psychotic self to that of the teacher he had loved so dearly. The voice didn’t help.

"You didn’t answer my question. Why am I here, and what are you planning?" ..There was a certain tension, almost anger in his tone. He tenses, pulling back, much like a frightened child, as she touched his chin. This… This was unlike her. Even then, she still continued to smile. He glanced about the familiar environment, not moving his head.

"That is two questions, dear Jade. I will answer only one." She smiles serenely then sadistically, coming to stand in front of him, definitely within reach. "You are here because I so wish it." She brushes her fingers along his jaw to his cheek and traces them just under his eye.

"The second would be no fun to answer - it would ruin our time together. Come, take a seat." She motions to a table and chairs which appear to have been stolen from a cafe or restaurant. On it sits two saucers with two tea cups and a pot of tea.

"Are you truly so surprised to see me? I thought you would be...happier, I suppose. Then again, you always were a stoic boy."

Jade draws his spear within moments, clutching it tightly in case she attempted to strike.

"Why are you here?" ..He wish he could say something else, but with her, he couldn’t be calm and civil like he would with most enemies… She was a damn monster…

"I have all I need now, Jade," she promises coldly. "I have no reason to kill others for their fonons - mine are stable. Yet you still insist you will lock me away in that forsaken glacier?"

She flicks her hand and her sword slices at the spear, deflecting it towards the ground. Her own attack begins to grow, the fonons dancing around her like excited children. Her eyes were locked on Jade. If she had anything to say about it, she will not return to that abyss.

Jade draws his spear back to his hand, still tense, appearing to await her next move…

"Why wouldn’t I lock you away? Or better yet, why not just kill you? You may say you have the fonons you need, but I decided it would be best when you attempted to strike before, while my guard was down…” ..A sharp pain hits his chest, but he shrugs it off.

"You toyed with my mind, and you toyed with my heart… Not an easy feat, but one not easily forgiven… If at all." He whispered, so she wouldn’t hear, before beginning to cast again.

"You still promise me death, Jade, yet you were unable to do so the first time, and the second required much of your friends' abilities and lives. How dare you speak as if you are superior, as if you have never committed a sin." Her eyes narrow as fonons gather around her in a loose ring.

"Can you truly kill all that remains of someone so close to your heart? Even you I cannot see as so heartless, Jade."

"Jade! My, how you've grown."

"Of course I have. It’s been many years, you know."  He eyed her with suspicion.  Her attire made it certainly clear.  Time will never go back, of course.  "What brings you here?"  He tried to bring his mouth to a slight sarcastic smile, but it was no use.

"Oh, everything is alright.  I don’t get many visitors so I’m not quite used to it just yet."  He gingerly reached out with his left hand.  Despite that being the hand of trust, his right hand could be readied with his spear.  Still, he kept a calm demeanor and lightly smiled.

"So I’m one of the few to get to see your office? I’m honored." Her fingers gently took his in a light hold. "It’s an enormous space - do you use it all? And where is Saphir?"

"Well, people like to barge in without my permission so I never know who comes in."  He let go of her hand, feeling no hostility at the moment.  "I do enjoy this office more than the manor which is quite too spacious for only one person." He sat down on one of the two couches around the coffee table.  He gestured that she may take a seat.  "Dist is out of jail; on parole.  He’s being kept in a high security lab so he may conduct fontech research for the Empire."

"And Nephry? She is married now, yes?" Nebilim asked as she took the seat he’d offered to her. She looked all around the clean office; it was just like him. "I had heard Peony took the throne already." She frowned at the news about Dist. "At least he is free now from prison…what happened with him? You two were once so close."

He nodded at her statements. “Yes, my sister had gotten married. She is unfortunately a widow now, but doesn’t seem to mind.”  He sighed at the mention of Peony’s life. “Your statements of His Majesty are true as well.  He doesn’t seem to act like it though.”  He looked down, annoyed at the mention of Dist. “I don’t ever recall being close to him in the first place.  However, when one commits crimes, they are usually confined in jail.  I figure you understand that much,”

"So much has changed since those days, but then again, much seems the same," Nebilim sighed, still smiling. She shook her head. "Of course I understand that, Jade. I meant what caused him to go to prison? Sometimes I honestly wondered how he got into more trouble than you did."

"I’m offended, Professor.  Me? Get in more trouble than him?  That’s preposterous." He gave a mocking offended look, drawing out his vowels to extend the point.  "Dist simply went against simple ‘rules’ of life.  He’s slowly going back to the way he was, albeit the attitude will always be the same…"  He sighed, not wanting to think of Dist’s crimes.

"He is lucky to have a friend like you on his side," Nebilim concluded with a smile. "And you must admit, sometimes at school you were able to get him into more trouble than Saphir by himself. It is quite amazing to see how time can change so many things. I am proud to see how far you have come, Jade."

Jade watched for a moment as her demeanor changed, but still on his toes. “I do believe I’ve always been the same, but I’ve been fine.”  His hand twitched slightly, unsure of his next course of action.
