They successfully completed the mission hours ago and they're due back in port at 08:00 tomorrow but it's almost midnight and she still can't sleep, too high on adrenaline and almost losing Mav and Rooster to even remotely close her eyes.
She'd finally decided to see if some fresh air would calm her mind but it didn't, usually, the view of the starry sky and the sound of the waves was enough to calm her mind but tonight it seemed to do nothing to ease her restless mind.
She was so lost in her own thoughts she didn't even notice that Hangman had appeared next to her.
"Natasha? You good?"
It was the use of her first name that pulled her out of her thoughts.
"What?"
"I asked if you were good. You were pretty spaced out there and you didn't respond the first couple of times I called your name?"
"Oh yeah, uh, I'm good. Can't sleep. Still running off adrenaline I guess." She offered vaguely but based on the slight frown on his face he wasn't satisfied by this answer. But how was she supposed to tell him everything that was going on in her mind? Between the events of the mission and whatever the hell was going between them, she had enough thoughts to keep her up for days.
Thinking of the mission was self-explanatory enough, it had been a rough mission but they had succeeded. The part she couldn't explain was her thoughts of Jake and what was going on between them.
There'd been tension there since top gun but it had intensified ten-fold since they'd been called back. they'd been constantly bickering— flirting—since they had arrived and it was killing her to not finally do something about it, sure he could be an ass sometimes but he really could care and he was attractive as hell, plus he could go toe to toe with her and that was something few could do.
But with the looming threat of the mission, it wasn't the time to explore her feelings.
"Come, Phoenix, what's on your mind? And don't tell me it's nothing"
"Just the mission mainly"
"There's more to it than that"
Natasha pauses to think, should she really admit that it's also him that's been on her mind? Her silence must make him more curious because he offers a soft, "Nat?" that pushes her to speak again.
"You." She says it so quietly she barely hears it herself.
His brow furrows in confusion as he mutters "What?"
"You. I've been thinking about the mission and you."
"Me?"
"Yes, you." It feels silly to admit now, she realizes that he might not feel the same way but she was glad to get it off her chest.
He's silent for a few minutes as he looks at the water and she takes that as his response. She nods silently before turning to make her way back to her bunk.
"Natasha. Wait." He says reaching out to catch her wrist.
She lets him pull her towards him before he cups her cheeks softly in his hands. They stand like that for a moment before he finally speaks. "Permission to kiss you?"
She's slightly taken aback, having expected rejection just moments ago, but she only pauses slightly before muttering out a soft "Yes."
As soon as Jake has her answer he's pressing their lips together in a fervent kiss. They stay that way until they need to break for air.
Jake rests his forehead against Natasha's taking a moment to catch his breath before speaking again.
"You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that."
"I think I might have some idea, since top gun right?"
"Yeah."
"Me, too." Is all she says before kissing him again.
Look, I have an example to set. I can’t be bringing home guys on the first date. This is not our first date. You know what I mean. Okay. Fine. But this is the last time I go out your window. We’ll see. No, no. I mean it. I’m never gonna leave you again. Oh, shut up.
